BUTTER SUBSIDY

Mr. J. A. Nash’s Proposal SUBJECT OF RESOLUTION Dominion Special Service. — Palmerston North, December 8. In an interview last week, Mr. J. A. Nash, M.P., director of the New Zealand Farmers’ Dairy Union, said that in view of the present serious position of the butter market, he had suggested to the Government that he was in favour of he introduction of a scheme for the payment of subsidies to dairy farmers in times of economic stress, and had recommended its consideration.

Following this proposal up, Mr. J. Kent, of Waikanae, gave notice at the Manawatu executive meeting of the Farmers' Union on Saturday that he intended to move the following resolution at the next meeting “That the Government be asked to subsidise dairy farmers in order to guarantee them a return of not less than

one shilling per pound for butterfat.” Mr. Kent also gave notice to move that the Government be asked to take a referendum of all the dairy farmers on a proposal to take steps' to do away with the Dairy Produce Board.
