FARMERS FINED
No Heavy Traffic Licenses Dominion Speciai Service Masterton, December 8. When five farmers appeared before Mr. J. Miller, S.M., in the Eketahuna Magistrate’s Court charged with using lorries on the road with a weight that necessitated a heavy traffic license being taken out, it was pointed out that the lorries were for milk traffic only and were only on the roads for a few minutes every day. It was admitted that others supplying the factory had licenses, but it was stated that they were using their lorries for other purposes, such as carrying wood.
“Well, the position is plain,” said the magistrate. “If 'a lorry is oyer 2 tons a license must be taken out or otherwise a penalty is incurred. The plea that the road is only being used for a few minutes cannot stand. It would not be fair to those who take licenses out. . . I will take into consideration the fact that you are all dairy farmers. In instances the taking out’, of licenses is being evaded and the penalties are being made more severe. If the road is used the license fees must be paid ”. Defendants were fined £2 in the case of those liable to register under “A” class, and £1 in the case of those under “B” class.
