Athletic young men in immaculate flannels ’viciously punch balls at one another on Hie tenuis courts; other flannelled athletes pitch, swipe at, and chase harder balls on the cricket fields; an older generation gently rolls harder halls still along the velvet swards of the bowling greens; in the outskirts of the city on the golf courses other groups of men are cursing the smallest of all balls after trying to hit them out of reach. Yes, continual warfare every Saturday afternoon between man and' ball, but afterward peace, perfect peace, when good old Edgeworth is pulled out of the pouch, the friendly briar is filled and conies the smoke of sweet understanding.
