PITIFUL TRAGEDY

Death of Five Children

FUMES FROM HEATER (Rec. December 7, 5.5 p.m.) Brussels, December 6. On the eve of St. Nicholas Day, which is celebrated like Christmas in parts of Belgium, Madame Thery, living with her uncle, put to bed five children whose ages ranged from seven months to six years. She lit a gas heater in order to warm the room and returned later to fill their Christmas stockings. She found the heater extinguished and the room filled with gas. All the children were suffocated.

She was admitted to a hospital in a distraught condition after vain efforts to revive them.
