GLENROWAN WINS DUEL

Racing at Ashburton and Taumarunui

CYLINDER OUT OF AUCKLAND CUP

Work on Trentham Track

The only race meetings held in the Dominion on '' el ° ’‘ uu ° l fixtures at Taumarunui and Ashburton. On including day Taumarunui, the principal event was won by Cruachan. In a two race for the chief stake at Ashburton. Glenrowan beat BeauGest:e. An announcement that Cylinder will not race for the Auckland Gup has been made. There was some interesting galloping at Trentham on batt day morning.

GLENROWAN’S WIN

Not Pushed by Beau Geste SOLWIT IMPRESSES Solid Late Run Dominion Special Service. Ashburton, December 6. Delightful weather favoured the Ashburton County Racing Club's summer meeting, and there was a good attendance. The course was in good condition. The totalisator handled £7401, against £0965 on the corresponding day last year. A Big Dividend. Investors started off badly in summing up the candidates for the opening event, the Highweigbt Handicap, as Duniblane, the winner, was allowed to pay close on double figures. The start was delayed by the fractiousness of several of the runners, and when the field was sent off, Mime was left standing on the mark, and Sporting Life aud Smithereens lost a lot of ground. The favourite, Jael, was the early leader, and piloted Parysia, Audience, Footfall, Quino- | pal and Dumblane round the far turn. Jael l was still in charge entering the straight, lint her effort did not last much longer, as I Dumblane and Quinopal both had her I beaten at the distance. The result was I never in doubt from this stage, as Dumi Plane was not at all extended to win by a I length from Shortly, who finished on ' strongly from the middle of the field, and I beat Quinopal in the last stride. Footfall i was close up next, closely followed by i Audience and Fresh Breeze, with Parysia ! and Jael next. I Lord Thomond Always a Winner. i The result of the Winehmore Hack HanI dicap was a triumph for W. Stone’s stable, 'I he bracketed representatives of which 1 divided the honours. I Elair, who drew the outside berth, was i first out from a moderate start, and led I round the top aud into the straight from Painkiller, Lord Thomond, Red Royal, Proud Knight, and Shatter. Painkiller had Flair's measure when the run home was entered upon, but she was only momentarily in charge, as Lord Thomond soon wore her down, and was always a winner, finishing in an effortless manner. He had two lengths to spare at the finish, while Pain--1 killer beat Red Royal by a length. Flair ' was two lengths away next, in front of 1 Shatter. Coll and Giggleswick. Glenrowan Beats Beau Geste. The withdrawal of High Court left two starters for the Tinwald Handicap, the pool ■ totalling £132/10/- only. ' The race requires little description, as I Glenrowan led his rival throughout. Beau ! Geste, who was handicapped by the bard I -oing. made an effort to bridge Glenrowan s I advantage over the last three furlongs, but ! could make no impression, and Glenrowan ' did not have to be ridden right out to win by a length. Solwit’s Performance. There were several defections from the Lagmhor Plate, and two divisions were not necessary. Night Recital was a staunch favourite, and carried 200 tickets more than were entrusted to Segravc. Weatherly was the first to show out, and he led round the far turn from Segravc, Minerval and Totolomai, who were followed by a bunch. Weatherly was displaced by Segrave inside the distance, and the latter was proclaimed the winner, but Solwit, who did not put in an appearance until the run home, was encountered, finished on with a solid run, and recorded an impressive victory by two lengths from Segrave. The favourite also came from the back to gain third money, a length away, and was followed by Weatherly, Ringing Cheer, Minerval and Nightcap. Ball Dress Outclasses Hack Field.

The contest for the Moreton Hack Handicap was spoilt to a large extent by a straggling start, and in the scramble the rider of Craigavon was unseated. Pharaoh assumed command in the first furlong, and had au extensive break on the field rounding the far turn, his nearest attendants being Ball Dress. Night Effort, Night Parade, and Water Power. Pharaoh showed signs of weakening turning for home, and Ball

Dress shot past him with Night Parade and Night Effort closing up. Pharaoh came with a renewed run inside the distance, but Ball Dress outclassed the field, and recorded a very easy win by three lengths from Pharaoh, who was two lengths in front of Night Parade. Ramo was close up next, in front of Palmary and Locksley. Best Finish of Day. The Wakanui Handicap had the best start and the most interesting finish of the day. The second choice, Great Star, was quickly in front, and was joined by Miss Mercia at the end of two furlongs. Ihe pair was well clear of First Raid and True Shaft at the straight entrance. Great Star shook off Miss Mercia at the distance, but was then challenged by First Raid and True Shaft. Great Star weakened under pressure in the last few strides, and in a close tussle First Raid beat True .Shaft by a length, with the fast-finishing Mount Boa only a head away. Great Star was half a length back, clear of Miss Mercia, The Raider and Solferite, with Arrowmir a bad last. Details of the Racing By Telegraph—Press Association.

Dwyer intends to take Paratoo and Knollmere to Woodville. The former was given a gallop over seven furlongs yesterday, being picked up at five furlongs by Knollmere. The latter finished a shade in front, both going nicely. Paratoo’s time was Imin. 33see. This morning be put in two rounds on the plough at threequarter pace. He is in great fettle, and should run well on Tuesday. Knollmere also is bright and well, hitting out very freely. He must ruu a good race in the hack sprint. Queanbeyan and All Humbug also are to visit Woodville. The former appears a bit sore, but she went well in a spin over three furlongs with Impetuous this morning. AU Humbug went a circuit, finishing up by running the last three furlongs in 39 l-ssec. lie is improving with every gallop. .Auctioneer has been sore since racing at Feilding, and was given easy work. Mr. F. Bristol will be represented at Woodville by Queanbeyan and Hampden. The latter won nicely at Feilding, and will be al! the better for that race. The race that Hinewai had at Feilding brightened her up. and she is likely to be greatly improved for the holiday meetings. She was given a couple of rounds on the plough. M. Gardner will probably take a team consisting of Fernden, Koroklo, Just au Idea, and Danny Boy to the Wairarapa at New Year. THE AUCKLAND CUP Cylinder Not to Start (By “The Watcher.”) Cylinder, the leading three-year-old of the season, winner of the Wanganui and Avondale Guineas, the New Zealand Derby, and the Stead Gold Cup, will not be a runner in the Auckland Cup. In view of the fact that he was so leniently treated in the two-mile handicap by being let in at 7.6, which is 31b. under bis weight-for-age, a great deal of interest attached to the intentions of bis connections. The information that it is not intended to start him in the Cup comes direct from J. H. Jefferd, and is a definite decision. WAIPA HANDICAPS Changes Announced By Telegraph. —Press Association. WOODVILLE FIELDS Large Acceptances PRELIMINARY REVIEW

(By

“The Watcher.’’)

The WoodvUle District Jockey Club received an excellent list of acceptances for its summer meeting, to be held to-morrow and on Wednesday. lu fact, in one or two eases the Helds are large enough to be embarrassing. However, Woodville track provides first-class going, with a long straight, giving horses that come from the back a good winning prospect. The Hurdles. The Maugaatua Hurdles is for hacks, and several fresh runuers will be engaged. Not many of them have form, and the best appears to be that of Easterly, wl scored in open class at I'eildiiig in smart style. Llandudno is commencing his jumping career, and there is no reason why he should not race well, for he is a cut above hacks on his fiat form. Kaokaoroa and Evening Hero look lightweight possibilities. Easterly, Idanduduo, and Kaokaoroa may run well. Maiden Form. The maidens in the Trial X’iate have mostly been in action, and the form 7 is not of a high standard. Appledore,■ however, showed improving form at Riccarton, where he ran a good race in the Derby, and maybe he will be ready to show the improvement that has been expected of bis breeding. Joie de Vai should run well, and Beverage and Viaduct raced fairly well at Feilding. Kalmuk, who will be coupled with Appledore, is also worth consideration. He has not done much racing, but at Masterton in the autumn he split Arajeau and Autopay in the two-year-old handicap. This bracket and Joie de Vai may do best. Bolton Handicap. A useful field of handicappers will run in the principal race, the Bolton Handicap. Merry Damon was unlucky at Feilding, and the long straight will give him a better opportunity. He should beat Gay Crest. Paratoo will be one of the favourites, and his form suggests that he will be hard to beat. Blimp ran second at Feilding, but with luck Merry Damon should reverse positions. High Falutin' must be considered, while Patko, Spearnilss, and Bold Front look the likely ones at the tail of the handicap. It is a field where a surprise may eventuate, but Merry Damon, Paratoo, and High Falutin’ should race well. The Youngsters. On what has, been seen of tho two-year-olds in the Nursery Handicap, backers are likely to stick to the form of Chief Cook and Hampden. The winning performance of Chief Cook at Riccarton suggested that he would develop into a good sort. Haulbowlino, Royal Baby, and Interlocutor have shown form, and Royal Baby might go well. Chief Cook and Hampden appeal. Post positions will influence the result in this big field. With tho Sprinters. An interesting reappearance in the Oete Handicap will be Goshawk. No doubt he will need a bit of racing before being seen at his best. Riccarton form points to Arrow Dad and Royal Parade, and of the lightweights tho most likely seems to be Atholspear. was very unlucky at Riccarton. The trio to appeal are Arrow Lad, Royal Parade, and Atholspear. A Large Field. The very large field in the hack sprint, the Mangarawa Handicap, contains several with receut form. Tahoma, Tripping, Paktterc, Golden Shadow, Knollmere, King Acre, and Rothen all have to be considered. Tripping looks the best of the topweights, while Knollmere and Rothen are a couple more who should be prominent. Hard to Pick. The hack distance event, the Wharitai Handicap, should provide an interesting race. Lordlike, Dainty Ways, Ben Hur, Aemll, Jayson, .Pewa, Arrowhead, Hawkshaw, and Cessation all have recent form, and there are others like Arrowaone, Kiriaua, Zephyrus, and Auckland Gas likely to run well. Auckland Gas has been unlucky in his receut starts. Lordlike, Arrowhead, and Hawkshaw may show up. Bleearton Form Best. Atholspear if reserved for the Borough Handicap should be prominent. Head Serang on his Riccarton form is another entitled to consideration. Desert Song, Queen’s Choice, Maui, and Full Mark may be possibilities, and Hopwood may show form. Head Serang and Atholspear appeal. TWO DIVISIONS PROBABLE Nursery and Mangarawa In two races at Woodville'to-morrow, the Nursery Handicap aud the Mangarawa Handicap, the acceptances exceed the safety number, aud divisions are provided for. In the event of there being more than nineteen starters in the Nursery (twentyone acceptors), the divisions will be as follow:— NURSERY HANDICAP, of 130 sots. Five furlongs. First Division.

In the event of the race being run without division the following horses will be bracketed on the totalisator :—Chief Cook and Chief Clerk, Teller aud Buster Brown. In tho event of there being more than nineteen starters in the Mangarawa Handicap (twenty-four acceptors), the race will be run in divisions, as follow MANGARAWA HACK HANDICAP, of 130 sovs. Six furlongs.

TEN-SHILLING “TOTE” May be in Use at Pahiatua Dominion Special Service. I'aJiiatua. .December 6. A special meeting of the stewards of the Pahiatua Racing Club was held recentlv to consider the advisability of installing a ten shillings investment machine at Its forthcoming meeting. The opinion was fairly general, in view of the present financial stringency, that It was a move In the right direction, and the advice of Messrs. Marett and FoX is to be sought in the matter. Following their reply, the stewards will again meet anti definite action be taken.
