PAYING THE LEVY

Unemployment Act MONE Y POURS IN Issue of Booklets NO TROUBLE EXPERIENCED In spite of the fact that less than a week has passed since the first instalment of the unemployment levy fell due, about 250,000 coupon booklets have been issned by the postal authorities throughout New Zealand to those liable for payment under the Act. This estimate covered the Issue of booklets up te yesterday, and thousands are being handed out daily. Payments of the levy in whole or in nart are being made in a steady stream in the nature of a rush has been ex perienced so far reports, from parts of the country indicate that those responsible for dealing istration and levy receipts are bein s receives . coupon booklet on application does not nav the levy, money is coming in free ly/as is indicated by the fact that over a quarter of a million booklets have been issued. Final figures show that a total of 25,141 persons registerunder the Act, in Wellington alone and of these 10,845 have already received their booklets.

Willing Payment.

The postal authorities who are conducting the administration of the Act insofar as it applies to re^stra T°“ and the payment of the levy, lepoit that no trouble has been experienced with those brought under the provisions of the new law. It is stated that registration was wilU “ throughout the country and that the obligation to pay the first instalment of the levy has found ready acknowledgment. Employers havcalsogiven every assistance to see that then staffs registered and in some cases co-operation has been extended to the payment of the levy. Onus on Employers. It was recently suggested that employers would not see their way clear to assist in the collection of the levy from ■their employees. Although it has been found that this has been the case with some firms, it is stated that employers generally have been ready to give every help. The Act definitely places upon employers the onus of, seeing that those they employ are both registered and m receipt of forms showing that they have paid the lew-. While some may not be disposed to insist at present that their employees have paid the levy, it is obvious that they will have to concern themselves in this respect after the end of this month. It seems that unless employers can otherwise satisfy themselves that workers are registered, and have paid the levy,up to date, they will have to keep special record, as it is an offence to employ anyoik? who has not complied with the terms of the Act.
