MAILBAG ROBBERY
A daring mailbag robbery was brought to light in England. When cleaning a drain alongside the railway line at Mitcham Junction, a workman found the bag lying at the bottom. It had been torn open and some of the contents were strewn about. Two registered packets known to have been enclosed in the bag were missing. The bag, known as “the Battersea Bag,” had been sent from Mitcham head post office six nights before. At the junction the post office officials, following the usual custom, left the bag to be forwarded to London Bridge, but on arrival it was reported missing. Most, of the letters lying alongside the bag were too badly damaged by exposure j to the weather to be delivered.
