Rama’s active brigade. Taneriri performed consistently well as a four-year-old last season, when he won six of his engagements and £1675 in stakes. Some time after racing in the Thompson Handicap at Trentham in March he developed a weakness in his near hind joint and had to be thrown out of work when being prepared for winter racing. In the meantime he has had a good spell and he has come back to work in burly condition. His doubtful joint is, still enlarged, and although it looks better than it did, there is a chance that’ the trouble may again manifest itself when the time comes for him’ to be sent along in earnest in his work. However, time alone will tell whether he will stand and it is to be hoped that be w-ill, because he is one of the few horses at Ellerslie capable of Winning a good handicap race. NEAJRLY A BOIL-OVER Rank Outsider Runs Third There was nearly a sensational dividend at Winton last Thursday, Birdwood, who ran third in the Benmore Handicap, being the rank outsider in a field of 13. Only four ten shilling.tickets were invested on his chance, and the holders ’received a thrill when he ran into second place at the straight entrance. However. Night Rose finished strongly and wou from Cyrille 'by two lengths, with Birdwood one length and a half away third. Birdwood is a six-year-old gelding by Some Boy II from Faldla.
