RUTHERFORD HOUSE

Hostel at Nelson College EDUCATION CONTROL Dominion . Special Service. Nelson, November 26. In laying the foundation stone of a new hostel at Nelson College, to be named Rutherford House, in honour of a distinguished old boy, Sir Ernest Rutherford. the Minister of Education, Hon. H. Atmore, stressed the need for unification of the controlling education authorities in a district. One controlling authority in charge of primary, technical, ami, academic education, he said, would make for efficiency and thoroughness. No education was complete unless it had its practical side, said the Minister. He had noticed when visiting various secondary schools throughout the Dominion that girls had not been treated fairly in regard to expenditure on their education. He looked upon the education of girls as being equally important to that of boys. In giving a description of the hostel, which provides accommodation to replace that destroyed by the earthquake, and makes provision for the rapidly increasing number of boarders, Mr. Atmore said his instructions to the architects were that the new buildings were to lie designed and constructed so ns to have earthquakeresisting qualities and that the hoys were to be given first consideration. Steel frames were used, with reinforced concrete panels. The buildings were being constructed on the hospital principle —a central block with pavilion wings in which would be placed the dormitories and living quarters. Eight of the dormitories would obtain the first morning sun. and the ninth would obtain the sun in the afternoon. The dormitories were designed as balconies, so that the boys would really sleep iu the openair.
