OLD GUARDHOUSE

\ Demolition Started A start was made yesterday on the demolition of the old guard-house at the Bowen Street gate to Parliament House grounds. The building is to be removed in accordance with a scheme to improve the layout of th? corner consequent upon its remodelling through the removal of the buildings on the old Quinton’s Corner, and the erection of the war memorial pylon. In former days the small wooden structure which now stands at the Bowen Street gate served as a guard-house for the artillery when 'the present southern wing of Parliament House was used as the residence of the Governor. It then stood at the other end of Bowen Street, facing The Terrace. Since being removed to its present position, it has been used for odd purposes, and its demolition was decided upon when the corner was remodelled. Its removal will enable a greater sweep to be given to the lawns behind it, and the result will be more in conformity with the new layout of the area surrounding the memorial.
