PERILOUS ADVENTURE

Disabled Launch Beached FISHERMEN’S HARD FIGHT Dominion Special Service. Auckland, November 25. A young Auckland fisherman, D. Whitelaw, had a perilous experience when his launch AK2125 broke down off Tiritiri Island, He made a landing by beaching the little craft at Whangaparaoa. , , Blinded by spray and without food or water, he had a hard fight to save the launch from foundering in seas that constantly swept it from stem to stern. Whitelaw, who is 23 years of age, left Auckland last Saturday and on Sunday, despite rough weather, fished off Tiritiri. Two anchors were carried away. The launch, besides shipping a lot of water, began to leak and the dinghy in tow behind was swamped., Whitelaw managed to get the launch across to Tindell’s Bay on the mainland and received assistance. This morning the launch and dinghy were .refloated and ' Whitelaw made a start for Auckland. When off Manly Point the propeller was fouled by a line and the engine was stopped. The wind. was off the land So Whitelaw made an improvised sail and tried to beat towards Auckland. He made progress at the start but later the launch commenced to drift to sea. it was at that stage that W, Fine and his mate in the fishing launch AK2119 went to the rescue and the disabled launch was towed to Manly.
