GOLFING BEACON

Late R. C. Kirk’s Work

(By

“Niblic.”)

No man has done more for the advancement of golf in Australia and New Zealand than the late Mr. R. C. Kirk, and the tributes paid to his services to the game at the opening of the memorial gates to his memory on the Hutt club’s course on Saturday last were'well deserved. . .• ...

As Colonel R. 0. Chesney; captain of the Hutt chib, renmrked, Mr, Kirk difi a Very great deal not oply fbr the Hutt club, but; for golf generiiiiy ; in tho Dominion. Colonel Chesney eould have gone further, mid declared .that ibe “Grand Old-Man of New: Zealand Golf” did signal service for the game in Australia also wlH'i', with Mr. Windeyer, lie donated the Kirk-Windeyer Cup for annual trials of strength between the leading players of Australia and New Zealand. Though the “Kirk Memorial Gates” will serve to keep the memory of the father of'golf in the Dominion green in tiie Hutt Valley, it will be in the hearts of goiters that tlie late Mr. Kirk will have his lasting memorial. As Sir Alexander Roberts truthfully remarked on Saturday, the late Mr, Kirk wns the most outstanding figure in tlie golf world of the Dominion, and he built so wisely that: liis memory'will become brighter as the game expands and .the standard of play . improves, as it assuredly is doing.

The Tuson Cup. The biennial matches for the Tuson Cup and tlie Veterans’ Salver were contested by the Christchurch and Wellington Clubs on the Shirley links at Christchurch on Saturday, and resulted in a sweeping victory for the, home team by ten games to two. Arthur Dunean maintained liis consistency by defeating E. M. Macfarlane in the battle between tlie No.'l’s, and J, G. D. Dunean beat G. S. Calvert ill tlie tussle between tlie No. 2’s. Here, however. Wellington's success ended, and Christchurch took the remaining six games. Christchurch also romped away with every one of the four four-bull games.

In the contest for Hie Veterans’ Salver G. H. Swann mid H. 8. Williams were the only Wellington players to score wins in the singles, wliile Hie Christchurch players again scooped the pool in tlie four-ball games.

Another Now Club Hvusc. That golf links are springing up like mushrooms all oyer tlie countryside is evident from tlie fact that; tlie Pueliiiknrlki Club opened its new club-house last week-end. The occasion was marked by a match with the Shandon Club, in which the Paekakariki players fittingly scored a victory. In 1940 tbe New Zealand national championship tournament may be played on the Paeknknriki links. There is plenty of land up.that way, mid it; is ideal seaside soil, while climate ami sceuery are delightful.
