TROTTING

Forbury Park Meeting - FIELDS REVIEWED The spring meeting of the Forbury Trotting Club will be opened on Thursday and concluded on Saturday. On a former occasion, a Dunedin render asked that I might publish the review of the TOorbury meeting in time to permit of the paper reaching Dunedin on the morning of the races, and I am again following this course. The programme is as follows: — ROSLYN HANDICAP (harness), of 20® 80v5.;'3.45 class; unhoppled trotters only. One mile and a half. Biddy Parrish scr Welcome Guy scr Great Oles ... ser Wally Bingen scr Merrijlggs .. scr Rapture 12 Patchwood .. scr Hydro no Pattio Bingen scr Silurian .... M Todd Lonzia , scr

No doubt Todd Lonzia will receive plenty of support in the Roslyn Handicap, but it has to be remembered that he is ofily a very young horse and is meeting several Competitors who have shown fair-form. Great Glee ,is a fair sort, and at Carterton last season won in 3.40 l-o on a slow track, while Merrijigs won at Ashburton in June ih 3.42 2-5. He, however, is not too reliable. Pattie Bingen Won at GreymoUtb, but Todd Lonzia finished in front of her at Methven and should do so again. He then went 3.44 4-5 and as it was his first time up in a race his performance was quite a creditable one, Wally Bingen won at _Oamaru in October, registering . 3.40 2-5. and winning very comfortably. A repetition or that form will make him a tough proposition to head off on Thursday. Rapture Won two races last year, registering 3.40 1-5 at New Brighton in December and 3,57 1-5 over 124 furlongs at Greymouth in January. Hydro ran third at Oamaru last month over two miles in 4.54 4-5,’ while last season he ran second a couple Of times at Forbury, his smartest effort for 12 furlongs being 3.36 1-5. His performance at Oamaru works back to about 3.40 nt 12 furlongs, which is the mark he is now on. Wally Bingen and Hydro may lead the field home. , PROGRESSIVE HANDICAP (harness), of 200 sovs.; 3.42 class. One mile and a . half. Baby Joan .. scr Sunny Morn .. scr Black Watch . scr Pearler scr Ballade scr Sister Rose .. scr Herod scr Seotty Biugen scr Emma Harvester Willie Derby . scr (late Muriel Har- Great Chenault 12 vester) .... scr Location .... 24 Madame Lydia Pointer . 24 Locaiida scr Locanda Lu .. 24 The Progressive Handicap' includes several promising young horses. Black Watch and Ballade ran second and third respectively to Rawhitiroa at Oamaru, going 3.32 3-0 and 3.34 respectively: Herod was unlucky in the opening event at the recent Wellington meeting, while later iu the day he ran second to Chenaway over 10 furlongs in 2.54 1-5. Sunny Morn won at Gore in 3.7' on a holding track. Pearler went to pieces iu the race he contested at Wellington, and so a reliable guide as to his form could not be secur-. ed. Scotty Bingen has 3.38 2-5 against him for 12 furlongs, but this is not good enough. Willie Derby is said to be a good sort, but he has no public form to warrant anyofie supporting him. Great Chen- I ault won at Greymouth over 124 furlongs, | defeating Travis by u nose, with Lydia Pointer fourth. Location and Lydia Pointer dead;heated for second at Banks Peninsula recently behind Rawhitiroa, tho former going 3.36 and the latter 3.35.‘ Locanda Lu has no recent form. All things considered I am inclined to think that Herod and Black Watch should do best. ST. KILDA HANDICAP (saddle), of 200 sovs.: 2.18 class. One mile. Brook Pointer scr Mountain , Gold Chimes . scr Chimes 24 Milo Minto ... 12 Liberal 24 Mac Dillon ... 24 Tommy Direct 3S The field is not a strong one in the St. Kilda Handicap. Of the pair on scratch Brook Pointer will lio doubt be in keen demand, as he is a useful saddle horse. His record last year was quite a good one, and at Forbury in June he ran third’to Country King and Kinney Dillon, going 2.15. Mijo Minto has not raced since the 1928-29 season, when she won twb races and was placed in three others. She has a winning record of 2.17 1-5 at a mile, but in the absence cf recent public form it is difficult to'asses* her chances in this event. Mae Dillon ran third over two miles at Addington in August, going 4.31 or equal to a 2.15| gait per mile. Mountain Chimes had only one race last season, and has not raced this season. Liberal ran third to El Direct and John Noble at Forbury last May, registering in 2.14 4-5, but he is an aged horse, and not likely to make > any improvement. Tommy Direct has no form to recommend him, and so it would seem that I am forced to return to Brook Pointer and Mac Dillon. »PRING HANDICAP (harness), of 200 sovs. 3.0 class. Qne mile and a quarter. 'Automatic .... scr Sunranes .... ser Belle Lorrimer scr Red-Shadow . 12 Elite Bingen .• scr Awaitl 24 Erin’s Chance . scr Real Girl 24 Holly Bank .. scr Sonoma Laddie 48 Lydia Pointer . scr ,M v a Lass .... 00 Radio ser Danny Boy ... 12 - Stella Bingen '. scr Several of those engaged in the Spring Handicap have winning form to_ their credit. Automatic ran second at Wellington in his initial outing last season, but lias not been in a,place since.' Belle Lorrimer ran second to Lydia Pointer over ten furlongs and a half at Greymoutb, and won subsequently over thirteen furlongs and a half, Molly Bank, who was conceding-36 yards, being fourth. Although Elite Bingen has won only one rnce, which was at Kurow in October, she lias other useful form to her credit. At South Canterbury in October she ran third to Red Shadow and Flying Cloud, registering 3.29, while (lie second day she finished second to Flying Cloud in 3.30 3-5. Holly Bank, an imported horse, showed good form at Greynioiith, but I do not think it was as good ag that of Elite Bingen. Stella Bingen was placed at Forbury last season over twelve furlongs, and wop at Oamaru in July from Author Franz and Tiny Bingen in 3.29. Sunranes, too, has winning form, having won the Wingatui Handicap at the Otago Hunt meeting in September. Red Shadow is good, and will probably be favourite. At South Canterbury he won by three lengths in 3.28, and he is no doubt capable of better time than this. Awaiti has a winning record, of 2.55 3-5 at ten furlongs, vvhile Real Girl lias won over the distance iii 2.59 2-5. Sonoma Laddie registered 3.24 3-5 when he ran second to Aleroil at Addington in September of Just year, but has not run up to that form since. Alva Lass has a record of 2.51 2-5. while Danny Boy has a placed performance of 2.51 4-5. This was registered at Ashburton in September, Danny Boy finishing third to Arethusa and Somcrby. with Belle Lorrimer fourth. There was then 24 yards between the latter and Danny Boy. whereas now ■ there is 72 yards; Red Shadow and Elite Bingen may receive most support. PRESinENT'S HANDICAP (harness). of 500 sovs.; 4.32 class. Two miles. Avenger .... scr Steel All 12 John Noble ... ser Erin's Fortune 12 Morning Sun ser Great Logan . 24 Snnnv Bob .. ser 'Muriel de Oro 24 Wrackeen .... scr Grand Light 24 Arikitoa 12 The President's Handicap bears an open appearance and promises to pro-

•vide a great contest. Avenger, although getting on in usually runs Well, and last season he took a winning record of 4,29 1-5 at Addington. John Noble has yet to prove himself at two miles. Morning Sun and Sunny Bob are trained by C. S. Donald and so will be bracketed. Morning Suu defeated Wrackeen over two miles at Forbury in June, with Erin's Fortune, conceding each 24 yards, third. At Addington recently Wrackeen ran second to Sir Author, registering 4.29 1-5, while she was unplaced in the race won by Sunny Bob, to whom she was then conceding 36 yards. As Sunny Bob registered 4.28 Wrackeen would have had to do better than 4.25 to have won, so there is no need to take her defeat on that occasion too seriously. Still on time Sunny Bob looks to have the best chance of the two. Of Arikitoa, Steel AH and Erin’s Fortune I am inclined to favour the latter, notwithstanding that Steel All registered 4.26 1-5 when he ran Sunny Bob to half a length in the November Handicap. Now Steel All meets Sunny Bob on 12 yards better terms. Erin’s Fortune went 2.10 in saddle at Addington and so is in good order. Grand Light ran second to Harold Logan at Oamaru, with Great Logan third, and I see no reason why he should not defeat Groat Logan again. In fact. Grand Light reads best of all to me, and if he can reach the judge’s box first his win will not be out of turn. Erin’s Fortune nnd Steel All may cause him most trouble. DOMINION HANDICAP (harness), of 250 sovs.; 4.4 G class; unhoppled trotters only. Two miles. Ambition .... scr Surprise Flfa scr Journey 48 Nelson’s Boy . 24 Stanley T. ... 60 White Satin .. 24 Lenwood .... 96 Trampcrisp .. 48 The unhoppled trotters will be seen in action in the Dominion Handicap, and the presence of Stanley T. in the field lends added interest to the event. . Ambition is a good sort, but so far has raced best at shorter distances than two miles, at which, however, she has a placed performance of 4.46. In the St. Clair Handicap at Forbury last June ■White Satin and Ambition ran first and second, the former having an advantage of one length and a half. White Satin now has to concede 24 yards, but I am inclined to think she will again do best. Fifa has not been placed beyond 14 4 furlongs. Nelson's Boy has raced disappointingly for some time, but Ims a placed performance of 4.40 4-5 against him. Trampcrisp won at Addington over 12 furlongs in 3.24 3-5, but Surprise Journey and Stanley T. Should account for him. The former won at Auckland in 4.56 2-5 on a holding course, while at Addington recently he ran second over 12 furlongs in 3.24. He is evidently very well. Stanley T. won at Wellington in 4.42 after losing ground at the start, and he appeared to have something in hand at the finish. Lenwood won at Addington last year in 4.42 2-5, and is now on 4.38, from which mark he is likely to find it hard to win.

To reduce it to two I should select Surprise Journey and Stanley T.

CAVERSHAM HANDICAP (harness), of 2UO sovs.; 3.30 class. One mile and a half. Alva Lass .... scr Sodium scr George Rey .. scr Si. George ... ser Kelp ser Captain Wrack 12 Lady Antrim ser Milo Minto .. 12 Roddy scr Lily Harold .. 24

Of the scratch division in the Caversham Handicap George Rey, who won a double at Forbury iu June, Kelp, Lady Antrim and St. George are likely to be in demand. Kelp won last year at Otahuhu in 3.28 4-5, while Lady Antrim ran second at "Wai mate in 3.32. St. George ran second to Kid Logan at New Brighton in 3.24 2-5. and lit and well should take beating on this occasion. Of the others Captain Wrack, who is shaping in improved style this season, appeals, most. Possibly he and St. George may pay the dividends.

DASH HANDICAP Giantess), of 230 sovs.; • 2.48 class. One mile and a .quarter. Delightful ... ser El Direct .... 12 John Jinks ... ser Jolly Chimes . 12 Nelson de Oro scr Free Advice .. 36 Proud Dillon . scr Logan Hanlon 36 Sunchild .... scr Talent 3C

The day’s racing will conclude with the Dash Handicap, of one mile and a quarter. Delightful won over the distance at Methven in 2.47 2-5, but is now meeting a better field. John Jinks was the smartest three-year-old last season and he won at Ashburton in 2.47, which time he should be able to better this 'year. Nelson de Oi’o raced well at Addington recently, while at Oamaru in October he ran a mile in 2.9 4-5. Proud Dillon, who wou at Addington in 4.29, is preferred to Sunchild, El Direct and Jolly Chimes, while of the three on 2.45 Free Advice rends best to me. She may. however, find it beyond her ability to overhaul John Jinks and Nelson de Oro. WELLINGTON CLUB The Dates Committee has given favourable consideration to the Wellington Trotting Club’s application for a reallotment of racing dates for the remainder of the season. These have now been fixed as follow: — Saturday, January 17, 1931. Saturday, February 14. 1931. Saturday, March 28, 1931.
