THE RACING WORLD

Acceptances for Feilding Meeting

NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By

“The Watcher.”)

The' Feilding and Ttikapunn meetings will commence on Saturday and conclude on Monday.

Hastings reports credit Shrewd with beipg In good order again. H. Gray is to ride him at Feilding. .. ,

Commandant was troubled with soreness in the feet at RiCcartoli and since returning to Greenmeadows R. Alexander has decided to turn him out for a while.

Up to .Saturday at Levin Playground had run very consistently. In his previous five Starts hb'wqn on fotlr occasions anti was Second in his other effort. He scored Over a mile at Otaki,/Masterton, Carterton aiid AVelliiigton, and was beaten in U seven-furlong event by Artowzone at the last-named meeting.

Mr F. C. Bother, the secretary of the Canterbury Jockey Club, was unable to bo present at the recent racing carnival, as he WHS laid aside with illness. He is well on -.the Way to recovery however and lie has resumed his office duties. Promising Filly. The oldest of the stock of the Phalaris horse Shambles are three year .olds, and the Levin winner Nightmare is one of them. Nightmare is a big well grown illly Of handsome appearance who gives every sigir of developing good class form. Up to Saturday she was a maiden and has taken time to come right, but recent races left, the impression that it would not be Jong before she got on the Winning list. Her success on Saturday was Very easily achieved, and she looks sure to get some money this season. Nightmare is out of Skydream, a mare bred in England in 1022 by Skyrocket from Little Thoughts by Elotsatn from Little Tinks by Breadknife from Weir by Oalopin. Skyrocket is by Sujist&r from Maid of the Mist by Cyllenc .from Sceptre and is a brother to Craig-an-Eran and three-quarter brother to Buchan. Skydream was Imported as a three-year-old in 1925 by the late Mr. John- Grigg specially for the stud and was never raced, She is now at the Llderslle ■ stud, Where .Nightmare was bred. As a yearling she was secured'by her present owner, Mr.-I, H. Collinson, at the Trentham sales for IOOgnS. She is engaged in the Great Northern Derby and Oaks and New Zealand St. Leger. She may not develop form good enough for tne Derby hut by the autumn it would be no'surprise to find her taking her place in classic fields with ' good prospects ot success; . -■... . ■ ‘

A Smart Hock. . Arg jean, Winner of the back Bpnnt at Levin, lb a three-year-old half sistei by Arltusib to Arrow Lad, She showed speed last season, winning (wo races and being placed on six • other occasions. Slio had had only one race this term prior to‘"Saturday, running unplaced fit the Otaki meeting. Arajean haS plenty Of pace and looks like .developing into a useful, sprinter though. ■ she. lifts a long way to go before reaching the same class as her’half brother. Bred to Improve. One of the most improved hacks seen at Levin was Arrowhead. When trained at Ricearton and later at. Awapuni before coming into the present owner. Arrowhead had tation for Speed but he always failed to do better than minor placings, J>ow that he has made .substantial improvement and got o«.. t . he , t winn 4" g is lis a t . we h n ought to go on with it. . He is a veil bred one.. being by Arrowsmith from ■ Orange Bloksom by Nassau from by Stepnlak. Orange Blossom m half sister to such noted horses as I rim, Artillerie, Mam (dam of Nightmarch) and Nunna. The Ricearton trainer G. Murray Aynsley, who bred. Arrowhead, has his >threc-vear-old half sister,:Kakara by Paladin, whom it would take some money to buy. More Solid Now. When First Money won the MeHonßld Memorial at Levin it was his first suefor twelve months. . It wa&> m vember last year that he won the open nprint at Otaki.' In the meantime he has been given a course of hurdling, and although he performed inglorlously at.his only attempts over the hurdles at Otaki last month, the new game has done him no harm, having thickened him out, and apparently made him more Solid foi fiat racing. He looks a good prospect for events in the immediate future if.he runs reliablyShould Get a Journey. Although the difference between hack and open company is on paper a couple of stone it frequently occurs that good hacks can go straight into the open class and prove that they are equal to the demands made upon them. Autopay is the recent outstanding example of a horse gpin„ straight from back class to a brilliant success in the open class. At Levin on Saturday Hunting Lail showed that he is another ex-hack who will win money in open company. There is no suggestion that he is up to the standard of Autopay, but he ran so well after being last to leave the mark, and losing a lot of ground, that he will enter into calculations for events ahead. On the way Hunting Call finishes in' his races he will be seen to advantage over distances considerably longer than sprints. ■ Bayacre’s Form. Bayacrc’b form in Australia justified better support than was accorded him at Levin on Saturday. He won the first division of a three-year-old haiioicap, six furlongs, at Canterbury Bark ; a welter, six furlongs, at Menangle Park; was second to Tregilla, who subsequently won fhe A.J.C Derby, in a seven-furlong event at Rosehill, and second to Veilmond in the Ilobartville Stakes, seven furlongs, the distance being covered in 1.2 b, Veilmond winning by three-quarters of a length, Nightmarch for Auckland. Nightmarch is not doing a great deal at present. He was thoroughly wound up for his Ricearton engagements, and a short rest will do him no harm, as there is nothing more tor him until the Lhilstmas holiday season arrives; Probably he will make his next appearance at the Auckland meeting. He will, of t '°urse, receive a big weight in the Auckland Cup, but he is capable of handling it,; and tfiis is a race in which the top weights freqnently run well. The Kings I.late rt.nu the Clifford Plate, the two weight-for-

age events, are almost certain to attract him, and they will arouse a lot of interest, especially if Cylinder tackles Mr. Louissoil’s crack again.

F. D. Jones's Team. ■Paquito is being kept going in useful tasks at Ricearton, and looks in good order to tackle other engagements in the summer. The two-year-old Solvent is also in regular work, being none the worse for het two hard races at Ric Carton. bo fat their trainer, F. D. Jones, has not made definite arrangements for the holiday programme, but if his horses go Otl all right it is probable that he will have a team'for the Auckland summer meeting. First Sight, who developed leg trouble on the Sydney trip, was given a spell when he returned home. He has again joined Jones’s active team, and s doing useful pace work. The big gelding is quite sound, and if he trains on he should win races later In the season. Limerick to Spell.

Since Limerick returned from Sydney last month, he has been pottering along on the lead at Ricearton, and he has freshened up wonderfully under this treatment. Having done so well F, D< Jolies decided to give him a couple of two furlong sprints, in which he acquitted him-self-with great credit, wWch was quite pleasing to his trainer. Tne old Limond gelding will now be an absentee from the track, as Jones has arranged to spell him in the paddock for a couple of months, after which he will resume work, with a view to autumn racing. feilding acceptances
