STOCKS AND SHARES Wellington Exchange A FAIR DEMAND A Bale of Commercial Bank of Australia at 17/1 is the only transaction recorded on the Wellington Stock Exchange yesterday. There was a' moderate demand for shares and the buying. list was wider than on Saturday. , . Government securities were very slow, only the 5J per cent, bonds (1933) being in demand, and for these £99/10/- was bid, against sales last week at £99/17/0. Wellington Kacing Club debentures were steady at £lO3/10/-, and New Zealand Breweries, stocks and bonds, were 3d. up at 21/3. There was a fair demand for bank shares. Commercial Bank of Australia were wanted at f?/-, with a sale at 17/1. National Bank of New Zealand were steady at £o/12/6. Bank of New South Wales were in demand at £32, ns against sales last week at £32 7/0. Bank of New Zealand were steady at 56/10, and the long term mortgage shares at 20/3. For Union Bank £9/12/0 was bid, while last week they changed hands at £9/15/-. New Zealand Investment Mortgage at 10/-, Wellington Investment at 10/3, and N.Z. Guarfantee Corporation at 7/- were steady and unchanged. South British Insurance were wanted at 50/-, and N. Z. Refrigerating, 20/- paid, at 8/7; Huddart-Parker, pre ference, were steady at 19/5; Tauplrl Coal, ordinary, were Od. up at 22/-; New Zealand Breweries dropped 3d. to 40/9; the halfyear's dividend of this company is at the rate of 12J per cent. Staples and Co. were steady at 39/-. Dominion Investments were up 3d. at 21/0; Electrolytic Zinc preference at 18/were down 3d. on the previous bid; National Electric were steady at 8/3; N.Z. Farmers’- Fertiliser were 3d. higher at 10/-; Taranaki Oil were wanted at 2/-, Hume Pipe at 10/-, and Wilson’s Cement at 40/-. Mount Lyel were Od. lower at 19/3.

In the six years the deposits aggregated £140,012,388, and the withdrawals to £149,360,400, the excess of withdrawals for the period being £8,757,021. In the last year the' deposits were small, while the withdrawals were exceptionally heavy, the withdrawals in the June and September quarters of this year being about £2,200,000. The, Post Office Savings Bank allows a generous rate of interest for what are practically demand deposits, but notwithstanding this the amount at credit of depositors must be contracting.
