It was John Ball, one of the leaders of the Peasant Revolt in 1381, who used to ask, “When Adam delved (that is, dug) and Eve span, who was then a gentleman?” meaning that it was the duty of all to work, and that the gentry had no right to idle and live on the labours of the poor.
