A MONTH’S TRIAL

Coastal Vessels Resume MANNING DISPUTE Temporary Settlement The dispute between the shipowners and the Seamen’s Union, which has held up the small coastal vessels Kapiti and Hawera since their conversion into motor-ships, has at last been settled — temporarily at least. , The Kapiti yesterday signed on a crew —including a greaser, the question of whose inclusion was the cause of the dispute—and is to leave Wellington to-day for Wanganui. The Hawera, the other vessel involved, has been lying at Auckland since her conversion from steam to oil. and is to leave there to-morrow for Wellington, to pick up her running in the Wellington-I’atea trade. No statement was made yesterday on behalf of either party to the dispute us to the basis or terms of the settlement. It was learned, however, that the vessels were to be maimed for a month with the crews required by the Seamen’s Union. This means that they will run for a month carrying the greasers (or wipers) who have been the cause of the hold-up. and whose presence oh board the vessel is required by the union. At the end of the month’s trial the onus will be on the Seamen’s Union to prove that the greasers have been necessary to the working of the ships, and the matter will be referred to the Arbitration Court for final settlement.
