CAR DOES DAMAGE
Shop Window Shattered
" LEARNER’S MISHAP Great excitement was caused in Pe(one on Saturday afternoon at 3.45, when a five-seater motor-car, which was being backed from out of Britannia Street, shot across Jackson Street and completely shattered the plate-glass window of the United Friendly Society’s chemist shop. The car was being driven by Mrs. McCallum, of Ohiro Road, Wellington, who was learning to drive under the direction of her husband, who was with her in the car. She had come from Cuba Street along Jackson Street and had turned into Britannia Street by the post office. The driver was backing into Jackson Street intending to turn and go toward Cuba Street again. 'Suddenly a cyclist cut in between the car and the kerb, attracting the attention for the moment of Mr. McCallum. Without warning the car shot across the road full into the front window of the shop. The plate-glass was completely smashed into small pieces, and the car received extensive damage to the back part of the hood. No one in the car was injured beyond a shaking. Although there were few about the street at the time it was not long before a large crowd collected.
