SUBURBAN TRAIN FARES
Protest Against Increases
.By Telegraph—Press Association.' Auckland, November 22. A deputation of suburban local bodies’ representatives to-day protested to the Minister of Railways, the Hon. W. A. Veitch, against the increases in suburban train fares. The speakers declared that the effect would be to drive people back into the city. ■ Mr. Veitch said that if that had been his wish be would have stopped every workers’ train in New Zealand, because the department was losing tremendously on them. Before the workers’ fares were increased recently it was costing the department £1 to earn ten shillings. He promised to consider the effect of the increases on local conditions in Auckland, also to examine a suggested extension of the period of workers’ tickets.
