Sir Charles Fergusson’s mazer, consisting of a maplewood bowl with silver rim, believed to have been made in Edinburgh in 1576, the fourth oldest example of Scottish silver bearing the hallmark, realised £6OOO at Sotheby’s. According to legend the mazer was the gift of the Scottish King James to a Fergusson who was a tutor-chap-lain.
