UNUSUAL POSITION

Council’s Highway Funds

PERMISSION TO SPEND Masterton, November 21. A rather unusual position was paid before the Main Highways Board, when it visited the Featherston County during its tour of the Walrarapa. Mr. Q. Donald, chairman of the Featherston County Council, said that the council had money to spend, wanted to spend It in order to keep Its staff engaged, but lacked the authority of the board to undertake the work. The council had expended the board’s subsidy for this year, and now asked that the board authorise It to continue with the formation of the GreytownBldwUrs cutting road, the county finding the money necessary (some £3000), and the board refunding by way of subsidy next year. , The chairman of the board, Mr. F. W. Furkert pointed out that the matter was really one for the No. 10 District Highways Board. If the main board consented to such a request, it would be mortgaging the future. It would inspect the locality, however, and if the district board was agreeable, would authorise the work.
