TEACHERS’ GRADING

Chances for Younger Men BOARD’S DISCUSSION Dominion Special Service. Auckland, November 19. “In trade a man is a full-blown tradesman in four years, but in the teaching profession it takes him 40 years to get to the top of the; tree,” declared. Mr. E. C. Banks at a meeting of the Auckland Education Board when the senior inspector submitted recommendations regarding teachers whose positions will rise in grade from February 1 next. Mr. E. C. Purdie said that it appeared that in some cases the recommendations and grading were inconsistent. Inspectors should take their courage in their hands and put teachers down if they thought fit and put them high in the list if they were of opinion that they deserved their place. “Young teachers should be given 'a chance,” said Mr. Banks. “At the age of 35 a teacher should be at the top of his profession. A teacher who reached the top of the tree at the age of 65 was probably not up. with the times.” The chairman. Mr. A. Burns, said that he thought the inspectors were now recognising the merits of young teachers more than they did” q. few years ago.
