Pool’s Initial Payment REDUCED BASIS Last Year’s Difficulties By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright (Ree. August 2i, 7 p.m.) Winnipeg, August 25. The Wheat Pool has announced a 60 cent initial payment on wheat. This is a drop of 10 cents below the initial payment fixed on July 15. An official statement expressed regret at the necessity for the reduction and explained that in view of the serious difficulties in connection with the financing of the 1929 crop the step had been taken to avoid a similar situation in 1930. It was realised that many members would feel that the payment was inadequate to meet their financial requirements, but the ultimate welfare of members made it vitally necessary that the pool should take no steps that might endanger the safety of their organisation. The hope was expressed that business interests would refrain from unduly pressing collections at this time, and pointed out that welfare of the prairie provinces was dependent on the solvency of the agricultural industry. It was denied that there was any likelihood that farmers would violate their contracts in order to get present market prices for their grain and pointed out that orderly marketing was the greatest necessity at this time.

A further payment is promised at the earliest date consistent with conditions.

GOVERNMENT AID Sought by, Saskatchewan ' Regina, August 22. Convinced that a state of emergency exists, the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool, .representing 60 per cent of the total yield of the province, is seeking Government aid and the formation of a wheat board to market the whole year’s crop, including that of non-members. A resolution advocating a board was presented to the Saskatchewan Government, which has called a conference of Western Government representatives.
