FEDERAL BUDGET
Prime Minister’s Defence ECONOMIES EFFECTED Prepared to Face Electors By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Rec. July 25, 11.40 p.m.) Canberra, July 25. In a vigorous defence of the Budget the Prime Minister, Mr. Scullin, said he did not mind constructive criticism, but ho saw no justification for the wholesale condemnation recently heaped upon the Government by opponents and the Press. If it could be substantiated that any of these charges were true, then he would gladly hand over the reins of office to those who could, undo the wrong the Government had done. . . » Mr. (Scullin detailed a long list of economies already effected. He declared that he saw no reason for reducing either Parliamentary or Public servants’ salaries, and assured the House that the Government was making a sincere effort •' to balance the ledger, and at the same time keep faith with the financial obligations here and abroad. The Government had to face the facts. It had taken drastic action to stop the drift and had necessarily done some unpleasant things. It was determined to make further economies, and, if necessary, he would face the electors at any time.
