MISERABLE TRIP

Maori in Southerly Gale THREE HOURS LATE Dominion Special Service. Christchurch, July 25. After a trip lasting over 13 hour*, during which she received a severe pounding by heavy seas, the ferry steamer Maori arrived at Lyttelton this morning at 9.40 o’clock, three hours late. The trip was as bad as that experienced by the steamer during the storm of June 12, but no damage was done to the fittings or cargo. The vessel received a pounding In Cook Strait, making things very miserable for the passengers, but no big seas were shipped, though the decks were occasionally swept by spray. It was very cold at sea, and at midnight ice lay thick on the navigating bridge. The Maori left Wellington at 7.50 last evening and halfway down the harbour ran Into a south-west gale with a moderate head sea. By 8.30 o’clock she had reduced speed from 16$ knots to 16, and half an hour later speed was reduced to 14 knots. At 1.15 this morn ing she was logging 15. knots, and by 3 o’clock was back to 16 knots. Her speed was afterwards increased to 17 knots. Usually the ferry steamer gets to Cape Campbell at 10.20, but she did not reach there until 11.47.
