In the year of 1897 it again was changed, but this time to a long distance race 330 metres (more than two miles), where it now stands. The first Derby over 3300 metres (in 1897) was won by the colt Benefiz, which trotted the distance at a 2.364 gait. Seven years later came the first winner below 2.25. It was-the colt Arganaut, by Cald, 2.071. which trotted a 2 231 (1-29 per kilometre) gait in 1904. In 1911 the great race was secured by the very fast colt Pierrot, which trotted at the rate of 2.1 <1 (1.20. b for the mile. This record is the fastest to date in this classic event, and there is good reason to think that it will not soon be replaced. The Derby is and has always been for four-year-olds only, in the Derby of this year twelve horses faced the starter, and the filly Alraul }® was a strong favourite, with Colorado Zealous and Friand next m the betting. When the starter gave the word, Friand was the leader, trailed by Colorado Zealous, Mnd these two horses held the command the first two rounds. Then Friand tired, and while Colorado Zealous went in the front for a little while, Alraune, who was last horse at the start, began to move up from behind. In the Imine stretch Alranne passed Colorado Zealous in an easy manner, and won with some two or three lengths to the good.
