Shanks the Champion The Wellington inter-cljib amateur billiards championship was concluded at Billiards, Ltd., showrooms last night when 11. Shanks. Workingmen’s Club, amply proved bls superiority over his opponent, A. Wakem; Federal Club, by the score of 500 to 202. The first half-dozen visits were quiet, but then Shanks got into his stride with 61, and in 12 consecutive visits scored every time with an average of 24 for the 12 visits. He turned the 300 mark with an average of 18, and did not score so freely in the final 200. Wakem had a hard run for hIH first hundred, when he was over 200 behind Shanks, after which he did better. Long losjng hazards were bis weakest point. The final score was:— Shanks, 500 Wakem, 262. Breaks:—Shanks: 61, 30, 57, 20, 37, 40, 21 unfinished. Wakem: 23, 23, 31, 23. At the close Mr. F. W. Vosseler presented the shield to Mr. Pickard, president of the Workingmen's Club, congratulating the club on having such an able representative. He presented a gold medal also to Shanks, congratulating him upon winning the championship for the fourth time. The loser was presented with the set of balls with which the championship was played, and the cue for the highest break by other than prize-winners went to P. DCvine, Petone W.M.C.. who made 55. Mr. Pickard thanked Billiards, Ltd., for the expense gone to and time given for the championship, which did so much .to encourage players to improve. The championship had been played under excellent conditions. Hearty cheers were given for the winner and the loser. |
