HEAVY SHAKE
Westport & Greymouth LASTS A MINUTE Preceded by Loud Rumble By Telegraph.—Press Association. Westport, July 25. Preceded by a terrific boom, Westport experienced at 8.42 this evening the biggest earthquake since last Christmas. People rushed from their homes into the streets. So far as can be gathered no damage of consequence occurred. Greymouth’s Experience riy Telegraph.—Tress Association. Greymoutli, July 25. A very sharp shock was experienced here. The direction was from the north. There was no damage, but considerable alarm was occasioned. Official Report A message received by the Secretary of the P. and T. Department (Mr. G. McNamara) from the chief postmaster at Westport confirmed the shakes at Westport and Greymouth, and added that the shake was also felt at Karamea. The Intensity of the shako, it was added, was six on the Rossi Forel scale. Felt at Wellington The shake was also felt at Wellington, but in a much lesser degree.
