GARRATT LOCOMOTIVES
Not Yet Satisfactory Several questions relating to the Garratt railway engines were answered by the Minister of Railways, Hon. W. A. Veitch, in the House of Representatives yesterday. “It is not proposed to import further locomotives,” said Mr. Veitch in reply to Mr. F. Lye (U., Waikato). “So far the Garratt engines have not proved satisfactory. One has been brought to Wellington, where careful tests and experiments are being carried out. Every effort is being made to overcome the difficulties, and there is reason to hope that they can be made to fulfil their purpose.” Answering Mr. G. C. Munns (U., Roskill), the Minister said it had been found that certain adjustments to the Garratt engines had been required, and it was possible that when these adjustments were made the engines might be capable of doing the work required of them. In the meantime it would be premature, to say that this type of engine was giving satisfaction. The total cost of the three engines placed in commission was £51,173.
