SUDDEN STORM
Yesterday’s Weather
A fine sunny day yesterday was succeeded by a violent southerly storm which sprang up very suddenly at about half-past eight last night. The wind was particularly violent, and was accompanied by rain squalls. During the early stages of the storm thunder and lightning were experienced. The weather was unsettled at Auckland, with a light but cold wind from the south. The barometer last evening was steady at 29.85 inches. Tho weather at Christchurch was flue but somewhat cloudy, with a light breeze from the east up till 3.30 p.m., when it shifted, and a gale sprang up from the south-west, bringing with it heavy rain. The maximum temperature was 50 degrees. The barometer fell steadily till tho time of the visitation, but in the evening was rising rapidly, the reading being 29.80. The gale continued in the evening, but the rain eased off. Conditions outdoors were bitter.
The weather was very wintry at Punedln yesterday, heavy rain falling at intervals. The wind was fresh from the south-west and conditions were cold. The maximum temperature at midday was 50 degrees. The barometer showed a rising tendency, last, evening's reading being 20.70 inches.
