THE LIGHT THAT FAILED

Business in the Gloom For several minutes last night the work of the Eastbourne Borough Council was carried on in darkness, the only light coming from matches held by the town clerk. It was just another instance of a “fault” in the Hutt Valley Electric Power Board’s lines, and was a striking commentary on remarks made at a meeting of the Power Board yesterday afternoon, when it was suggested that lines were at times being overloaded. It was to a clear sky with the stars shining brightly that councillors entered the council chamber. Very soon afterwards hail commenced to rattle on the roof, and, within a few seconds of a loud burst of thunder, the electric lights fa|lcd. , This, however, did not put councillors who were making their speeches out of their stride. The only disadvantage was that they had to go unreported. After a few minutes the lights came on again, and there was no more trouble. Enough was said, however, to show that there is a measure of dissatisfaction at the way electric current comes to Eastbo urue.
