BASKETBALL NOTES

Position of Teams THE QUEEN CARNIVAL (By "Defender.”) ' The fast approaching Dominion basketball tourney is brought to mind by news from Masterton that the team to represent Wafrarnpii has been picked. High bcliooi Old Girls has live representatives and Technical 0.U., Convent 0.G., Wesley, and rahlatua one each. Executive Meeting. It was announced at the executive meeting recently that the third grade team going to Taranaki this month is to stop nt Palmerston North to play there on the 29th. , . „ , It was agreed that the date for closing the queen carnival be extended to September 13. Miss Armstrong, who was to accompany the third grade team to Taranaki, is to go to Blenheim. She will probably be replaced by Mrs. Muir. A Progressive Association. It may not lie generally known that Canterbury is the only association in New Zealand with its own pavilion. It also has .a canteen, the success of which is largely due to Mrs. Brown, the Canterbury president. It supplies nearly all a basketball player’s requisites, shoes and stockings being lent free of charge. Quite a small protit Is made on refreshments, and is applied to improvements for the canteen.

Uints for Players. The inability of a team to obtain the services of a coach considerably' affects tbe standard of play. A few hints on how to Improve play may prove valuable to such a team, so the following has been culled from Ihe “Otago Daily Times”: — Much improvement could lie made in the play of the lower grades by attention at practice to certain matters which one gains the impression, arc now neglected. Perhaps the first thing necessary is mat all who are in responsible positions.as .regards clubs’ play should make themselves familiar with the' whole of the rule book, particularly with the foreword, which is meant to give a “picture,” as it were, of good play. Then the next step toward fewer find mistakes on Saturdays would be to realise that merely to play as a team for a halfhour or so is not sufficient. The game consists very largely of passing and catching the ball, for instance, and beginners especially need practice in these elementary things. Both passing and catching should be practised for a few minutes of each practice night. Players should stand in two rows alternately to oue another, and the ball is passed at chest level back and forth, the aim being clean catching, quick return, and ever-increasing speed. The passing of the ball up one line, across, and down the other is a useful variant of this exercise. The positions of the queens in the Wellington basketball queen carnival are as follow:—Miss H. Roberts, 8053: Miss E. Gapes, 3914; Miss I. Allen. 3283; Miss E. Bell. 3105: Miss C. Thomson, 2451; .Miss E. McGuire, 1728: Miss F. Card, 1402; Miss J. Buck, 1333; Miss W. Philpotts. H«4.
