“Counting the punches” is not a slang term for refereeing a boxing match, but it can well be applied to a practice of which one Aucklander has made a habit. The man in question was seen to pick up a tramway concession card, count the number of holes punched in it, and then throw it aside. Asked if he was optimistie enough to think that there might only have been eleven clips in the card, he replied in the affirmative, and then offered the information that for some time past he had made a habit of examining all concession cards that he saw lying about. “I find that there is often a free trip to be picked up,” he said, and from a pocket he produced three concession cards which had been discarded. although each was still worth one ride.
