Interesting Rugby CHATHAM CUP SOCCER There is a great deal of interest attached to the Hutt-Petone match 'at Athletic Park this afternoon, for Hutt, especially since its ranks were strengthened by A. E. Cooke, has been successful in gaining nine points on the championship ladder in seven matches, culminating with its defeat of Old Boys last Saturday. Petone is only one point ahead. There are many who predict that Hutt will win this afternoon, and while that is a very debatable point, the match should be an even one and should provide interesting football. University, which at length came to light with a win last Saturday, should be able to defeat Oriental, if last Saturday’s effort was not merely a flash in the pan. A match will be played between teams representing the Manor Park Ladies’ Club and the Waiwetu Ladies’ Club on the Waiwetu links this afternoon. Basketball. There is a big programme set down in the basketball competitions. Teams in eight grades will be playing, those of the “A” and “B” senior grades mostly at Newtown and Mount Cook respectively. The semi-final of the fourth grade seven-a-side contest will be played at Newtown at 1.45 p.m., the contestants being Gasco and St Thomas’s. Hockey. Hockey followers are promised good games to-day. In the senior A section Hutt will meet 'Varsity on the Hutt Recreation Ground, and at Karori Park, Wellington, will play against Y.M.C.A., and Wesley against Karori. Senior B matches will be played at Hutt, Petone, Karori and Kilbirnie. ...... . All the women’s senior A hockey matches will be played at Newtown Park this afternoon. The principal attraction will be the meeting of Swifts and Ramblers. At Tanera Crescent the native team, Toa, will make its second appearance in town. Road Cycling. A 25-mile road race, on the Continental system, will be held this afternoon by the Port Nicholson Amateur Road Cycling Club (Inc.), starting and finishing at the Central Fire Station.
