UPPER HUTT BOROUGH
FIRE BRIGADE FACILITIES. The Upper Hutt borough is at the moment concerned about its fire-fighting provisions, and the members of flic borough council arc anxious that the voluntary brigade shall be put in a position to render quick and efficient service in case of need. The few remaining three inch and one and n half inch wafer mains are. to be lifted, and replaced by four inch mains in the side streets, the main street already having an eight inch main. A branch of the brigade lias been established at Silverstrearn and is working in conjunction with the brigade in Upper Hutt. It has been decided to purchase uniforms for the brigade and further equipment in the way of hose and carts. The most important matter under consideration is whether it is necessary to have a fire engine with pump, and whether the mains are sufficiently large to warrant installing an engine. The opinion of experts is being sought on the matter. No time is to be lost in reaching a definite decision.
