BROTHERS CAUGHT
STOWED AWAY ON ■ STEAMER
Two brothers who had come to the end of their resources, and who tried to return to their homes in England by Stowing away, were frustrated .in the attempt. Balboa was as farAs they got, and they appeared in the Police Court yesterday on charges of stowing away on the steamer Somerset. They were Frederick Vincent Aloss, aged 18, and Bernard Harry Moss, aged 20.
Senior-Sergeant Dempsey said the brothers had been in New Zealand for over three years. They had worked on farms, but according to them there was no prospect of making much money at that. They went to Auckland on holiday,' but in about three weeks’ time what little money they had had all gone. They then stowed away on the Somerset in the hope of reaching London.
Two days after the boat left Auckland they were discovered on board, and they were put ashore at Balboa. After being there for a week they were placed on the Rangitata and brought back to Wellington, being arrested when the vessel arrived on Wednesday. The fare Jo Balboa was £5O, but there was no hope of recovering that. The Salvation Army was willing to take charge of the couple, and find them work, The probation officer, Air. T. P. Mills, said the brothers came to New Zealand under the Salvation Army’s settlement scheme for youths. Nothing was known against them. The accused were convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within a year. Frederick Walter Beech, aged 21, was sentenced to a week’s imprisonment for deserting from the steamer lonic at Wellington.
