QUIET MAY DAY

IN MOST EUROPEAN CENTRES RED DEMONSTRATION IN LONDON MOSCOW’S CELEBRATION By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Rec. May 2, 7.10 p.m.) London, May 1. May Day passed quietly in most European centres. Hunger-strikers have been converging on London during the past fortnight to participate in a Hyde Park demonstration organised by Communists. The demonstrators, including Lascars and other non-Euro-peans, made a procession through the streets singing “The Red Flag” and “The Internationale.” Among numerous banners and slogans one banner borne by Red children read: “Down with caning in school.” In Moscow the streets were filled all day with demonstrators, carrying effigies of the Pope and French and British statesmen. To-morrow has been declared a general holiday to enable the people to recover from their May Day exertions. Berlin reports no disturbances, but members of the Proletarian Flying Club flew over the processions, and one machine, by the irony of fate, made a forced landing in the police athletic field. Quiet prevailed in Paris, where the police made 223 precautionary arrests. A number of persons were injured in scuffles between the police and demonstrators in Czecho-Slovakla. In Vienna the police truncheoned Communists bearing seditious banners, and arrested twenty-five. A bull, infuriated by the sight of red flags, dispersed a procession at Wolkowysk, Poland, near the Russian border. LITTLE DISORDER IN AMERICA (Rec. May 2, 6.55 p.m.) New York, May 1. With the exception of Oakland, California, where four parading Communists were seriously injured by a police charge, the May Day demonstrations in the various cities of the United States generally were without incident. Boston reports that many children were in the parade there, which was without disorder. The Philadelphia Town Hall was guarded by police, while Communists held a demonstration nearby. Two Communists were seized at Schenectady while handing out Red literature. A few arrests were made at Newark, New Jersey. Sporadic fights resulting from Communist demonstrations in various parts of New York City resulted in fifty arrests. None of the disturbances was of considerable proportions. PRECAUTIONS IN TOKIO (Bee. May 2, 5.5 p.m.) Toldo, May 1. As a precautionary measure, 200 trouble-makers were gaoled overnight in Toklo. Labour Day passed without serious disturbance. The processions were escorted by 5000 police, who enforced order. A thousand women participated.
