MUSIC AND ELOCUTION
COMPETITION PIECES Selections for the Wellington Competitions Society’s festival to be’ held in August are announced. Mr. H. Thomas,, of Sydney, will judge the elocutionary section, Mr. Barry Coney, of Auckland, the vocal items, and Mr. Ernest Jenner the pianoforte selections, and Mr. Frank Crowther the violin items. Following are the pieces:— Elocution. —Recitation, ladies, “Midsummer Night” (J. Masefield.) ; gentlemen, “Carry On” (R. W- Service). New Zealand author, lady or gentleman: “A Song of Saddle” (S. S. Mackenzie). Shakespearean recitation: Ladies. “Portia’s Speecch” ("Julius Caeser, Act 2, scene 1. adapted) ; gentlemen, “Anthony’s Speech” (“Julius Caesar,” act 3. scene 1). New Zealand first recital: Ladies, (a) "Paul Revere's Ride” (Longfellow), (b) own selection; gentlemen, (a) “Marmion anti Douglas” (Sir Walter Scott), (b) own selection. Recitation scholarship, 16-21: (a) “By the Statue of King Charles at Charing Cross” (Lionel Johnson), (b) own selection. Recitation scholarship, 12-16: (a) “The Seasons” (extract from “Punch”), (b) own selection. Navy League recitation: “The Sea Kings” (C. E. Hodges). Recitation, girls 14-16: “Chustmas Bells’’ (Longfellow) ; girls, 12-14, “Morning Thanksgiving” (John Drinkwater) ; girls. 9-12, “The Pigeons” (Rodney Bennett) : girls under 9. "The Railway Tunnel” (Queenie Scott-Harper) : girls, 12-16. “The Singers” (Longfellow); girls under 12. “Hie New Duckling” (Alfred Noyes, slightly altered). Bovs. 16-20, “Merchantmen (C.
