“I am able to corroborate your remark that eats, though an enemy of rhe birds, more or less control the increase of stoats and weasels,” wrote Mr. W. W. Smith, superintendent of Pakekura Park, New Plymouth, to Mr. L. O. H. Tripp, the president of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society. “During my superintendeney of Pukekura Park I kept a welltrained fox terrier, and a large pure white she cat. The dog used to go into the park and hunt for stoats and weasels. He generally caught them earlv- in the mornings after a night's marauding. He brought the dead animals home and I examined the contents of their stomachs. The cat usually had kittens during October, and often went out and brought young ■weasels home U> feed her kittens •with."
