FIRES IN COAL CARGOES INSURANCE RATES RAISED To study Australian conditions in the interests of the marine departments of'seven British insurance companies which, he said, had been amalgamated for 100 years, Mr. Clement Taylor reached Australia from London on the P. and O. liner Mongolia, recently. Mr. Taylor said that his investigations concerned chiefly the importation of coal from England, and the cause of fire on vessels which carried it. Last year more than 100 ships had brought coal to Australia. Of that number seven had suffered from serious fires, and two had been a total loss. The insurance rate had been increased from 12/6 to £5/5/5 per cent., but as most of the insurance had covered cargo at the low rate, the companies concerned had lost heavily. The British Department of Scientific and Industrial Research had made several recommendations in regard to ventilation and other phases of shipping coal.

GREYMOUTH BAR BADLY SHOALED Owing to the continued fine weather, the Greymouth bar has become badly shoaled, and at the present time there is about 8 feet less water than was there some weeks ago. The result is that only tlie smaller types of vessels can be sent through, and even they can carry only about half-cargo. It is understood that this will have a serious reaction on the coal and timber exports. NORTHUMBERLAND AT LYTTELTON. The Northumberland (N.Z.S. The quarterly returns of laid-up shipping In .the ports of Great Britain and Ireland show that there is an Increase of 22,888 net tons of laid-up shipping, as compared with the last quarter of 1928. Compared with the corresponding period of 1928, the increase is greatest In Scotland, where the figures have risen from 14,630 tons to 29,885 tons. ' London docks and Southampton show decreases of 1600 net tons and 14,000 net tons respectively. On January 1, a total of 352,659 tons was idle, an Increase of 32.58 per cent., compared with 265,997 tons on October 1, 1929. NOVEL P. AND O. CRUISES. It is understood that shipping lines taking third-class passengers from England to Australia are losing between £20,000 and £30.000 a trip as a result of the falling-off in migrants and the companies are greatly perturbed. The P. and O. Company is initiating a novel scheme in an endeavour to tide over the period of depression. Commencing with the Moldavia on April 17, a series of cruises has been arranged from London to Marseilles and return in 14 days. The third-class fare is £lO/10/-, covering the entire voyage except for one night ashore at Marseilles. The passengers will remain on the Moldavia for one night, transferring to the homecominc Mongolia on the third night. The ship’s former second-class accommodation will be used. an<J every effort will be put forth to make it a pleasure cruise. It is anticipated that the idea will appeal to large numbers of persons of moderate means, as no other cruise compares with it in price. The special arrangements include late dinners and special excursions at Marseilles. There will be no suggestion of migrant conditions.
