FLOOD VICTIMS

DAY OF MOURNING IN FRANCE MAGNITUDE OF DAMAGE PREMIER PROMISES RELIEF (United Press Association.— By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (Rec. March 10, 7.5 p.m.) Paris, March 10. The Prime Minister, M. Tardieu, at Toulouse told the press that the state of things in the flood area resembled the devastated regions after the war, and emphasised that the remedy must be similar. Personal sufferings must be aided with hard cash, peasants housed, and the vine industry helped by the Government. To-day is a day of mourning throughout France for the flood victims. Flags are at half-mast, members of the Government have cancelled their public engagements, social ceremonies are postponed, and all broadcasting stations silent. It is estimated that the damage will reach a sum equivalent to £12,000 000. Despite the magnitude of the disaster, it is expected that the National Fund and Government grants will be sufficient to repair the damage. Between Montauban and Moissac many people are still marooned on the housetops.
