SAMOAN POLICE CAMP

Sir, —I am informed that at Trentham the cooks worked very long hours at this camp, starting about 4.30 a.m. and finishing about 7 p.m., with an. hour or two off. In view of so much unemployment I think the Defence Department should carry out the eight-hour day and employ more men. Perhaps they will explain per medium of your paper what hours they work these men at their camps. Also if they can lessen the hours and employ more hands during these hard times. —I am, etc., UNEMPLOYED. Wellington, March 7. [Defence Department officers stated in reply to the above that the cooks at Trentham were being trained for service in Samoa. They were members of the special military police force and were not civilian workers.]
