THE RACING WORLD

CONCLUSION OF TAKAPUNA MEETING NOTES AND COMMENTS

TAKAPUNA MEETING ROYAL DOULTON WINS CHIEF EVENT l WYNYARD PLATE TO PRINCE OF ORANGE Dominion Special Service. Auckland, Eebruary 1. The Taka'puna Jockey Club's meeting concluded to-day in heavy rain in the morning, but the weather cleared later. The track was slow aud the attendance good. The totalisator handled £42,150, compared with £57,171 on the corresponding dav last year. The total for the two days is £S7,7M, compared. with £98,875 last year. MOANA HANDICAP. Honiton and Chromadyne carried the money in the- Moana Handicap. Chromadyne,'Biddy Comet, and Royal Lover made the running but Honiton got up on the rails at the turn, and in a great finish just beat Chromadyne, with Loving Cup a close third, and Biddy Comet. Red Lion, and Sir Mond the next to finish. The first and second are good sorts that will go on 'improving. Chromadyne may hare won but for his rider letting Honiton up on the rails. WABVT3RA HIGH-WEIGHT. King’s Guard was a better fancy than Glena Bay in the Waiwera _High-weiglit. Quincoma and Salamander made the running, .but King’s Guard took charge three furlongs from home and won handily from Cybele, with Wcnday a fair third, and Mashoor fourth.

The. winner was too good a stayer for the opposition. Glena Bay and Golden Wedding ran badly. WYNYARD PLATE. 1 Havaspot was a solid favourite for the Wvnvard Plate, with Tuku next in request. Awamutu. Tuku, and Havaspot were conspicuous to the turn., where Vollmond and Prince of Orange joined in. the latter going on to win very easily from 1 oliinond, with Helium a fair third, well clear of Carl Idem, and Currajong . The winner gave a greatly improved display. and Vollmond ran up to form. Helium is a promising maiden by Gasbag. Havaspot had every chance, but tired in the run holnC ’ SUBURBAN HANDICAP. Eaglet and Valuation were both at short prices in the Suburban Handicap.. Valuation, Awarere, and Town Bird raced in a bunch to the turn, with Eaglet handy. Valuation then went on to win decisively from Eaglet with Cynthia N. a close third, and, Branson a poor fourth. The winner gave a very impressive display, and has not yet nearly reached his zenith. Eaglet finished well, but had no chance with the winner. TAKAPUNA HANDICAP. Good betting in the Takapuua Jockey Club Handicap saw Hyde Park and Royal Doulton at the head, of quotations. Lucy Rose and Hyde Park were always the leaders but Royal Doulton moved up smartly at the. top to lead round the turn from Hyde Park, Prince Vai, Sir Russell, and Maori Boy. In a great race home Royal Doulton held on to beat Maori Boy by a head, with Prince Vai a head away third, and Sir Russell, High Pitch, and Hyde Park next. It was a great race with Maori Boy, the unlucky runner. Had he got clear earlier he would have won. Sir Russell did well after being forced out at the turn, and Royal Doulton seemed much freerer on the. easy going. HOBSON HANDICAP. The Hard Works-Smithfield bracket was a better choice than Bells of Shandon in the Hobson Handicap. Hard Words led to the turn from Bells of Shandon and Set Fair, and he carried the other pair out wide, and getting an advantage, just held off Bells of Shandon’s final run. Set Fair was a poor third, with Full Measure and Betterment next. Bells of Shandon would have won but for losing on the home bend. • RANGITOTO HACK HANDICAP. Kaiwanga and King’s Guard headed an even pool on the Rangitoto Hack Handicap. Quinsilia and Haviland were always in front from Orchus and Spring Abbey. Haviland and Orchus leading into the straight from Nassock. Haviland won by less than a length from Nassock, with Luminary a close third, followed by King’s Guard and Spring Abbey. Nassock and Luminary were both unlucky in the early stages, the winner getting a particularly good run. Kaiwanga finished a bad last, and was evidently off colour. ANNIVERSARY HANDICAP. Tanerlrl was nt odds on with White Wings, also heavily backed in the Anniversary Handicap. Gemlight made play from Respirator and Roman Pearl, with Taneriri last. At the turn Gemlight and White Wings led Taneriri, the latter then coming on to smother the opposition and win comfortably from Gemlight, with Roman Pearl just beating White Wings for third. ( - The winner is very well and won like a good one. White Wings threatened danger at The turn, but again failed to run on. Gcnuight should win the first time he has a dry track. NOTES AND COMMENTS (By “The Watcher.”) “Te Kalnga,” Wellington.—Colossus never ran second In the Derby. It is a question of opinion which is the bestperformed Imported horse now at stud in New Zealand. ' “Wager,” Wellington.—Poethlyn won the Grand National Steeplechase In 1918 ami 1919. In 1918 the race was ’a substitute run at Gatwick. “Erin St.,” Hawera.—lnformation will be posted to you. Nominations for nil events at the autumn meeting of the Dannevirke Racing Club on February 26 and 27 will close on Friday at 9 p.m. Havaspot cost his supporters their cash at Takapuna. The way he shaped on a big course like Trentham was not promtsine for a turning course like Takapuna, and h© need not be condemned for his failures last week. S. Reid will meet the Sydney boat tomorrow and take off a couple of horses being sent over for a spell. One Is by Moabite from Courante, the dam of Valicare, and the other is a Valais horse. They will be sent up to part of tnc Te Mahunga estate In Hawke’s Bay. The Taranaki Jockey Club received an exceptionally good list of acceptances for the opening day of its autumn meeting on Thursday. Claes is particularly well represented in both the Cup and Flying Handicaps. Trentham trainers have been more or less held up since the Wellington meeting by bad weather, but yesterday s brilliant change saw the tracks pick up splendidly. It is a long time since trainers were more worried in the summer by soft tracks than by sore horses. It is understood that ». Reed will have the mount on Nightmarch In the James Haslett Gold. Cup. The two-year‘old Knocknny. in A. MeAulav's stable, may accompany Nightmarch and True Shaft to Sydney. Gav Ballerino his won 3780 sor a. In stake's since she was bought at 2000 guineas. She was a good purchase, particularly it her owner is a punter. The Solterino—Slonoxide colt purchased by an Australian owner is to be left a his breeder’s stud until ho is two years old, in order to get the benefit of New Zealand pasturage and climate. The latest advice regarding E. Shaw states that he is making very satisfactory progress, and is now able to move the leg affected by his severe hip injury. It is hoped to remove him from hospital in the course of two or three weeks. On Hawera Tracks, There was not enough rain on Thursday morning to interfere with training operations. The plough track was in first-class order (says the '‘Hawera Star”). Benzora was worked the reverse way round, and, after pacing a lap, ran five furlongs easily in lmln. Bsec. ■Silvermine was kept at easy pacing exorcise. Tenacre and Llanore did a solid round, running from the seven furlongs post home in Imin. 3osec. Latakia worked at strong three-quarter pace, which he was anxious to Improve. The two-year-old Awaken was exercised on the course proper, sprinting the last two furlongs of her work smartly. Fortalice afid The Warden finished on even terms over six furlongs, traversed in Imin. 19sec. , , Bon Eve and Joy Spear showed improved track form by running their five furlongs in lmln. s}sec., with Bon Eve a neck in front. J. Frver sent Ross Ferry, Mount Shannon, and Golden Flower a working gallop together over a mile, the trio doing lusec, to the furlong over the distance. Mount Shannon is putting more heart into his work and is on the improve. Bright Glow has freshened up nicely, and was given a couple of rounds at a good solid pace. This popular mare will be well fancied for the Taranaki Cup. in which race she will again have A. E. Ellis as pilot. „ - , Vivo and Copey galloped five furlongs in lmln. 7sec., with Vivo going best at the finifib, Paltonu was allotted solid pace work, which he accomplished in good style. ■ Coalbag was again too good for ArauItuku in a work-out over six furlongs, in Imin. 21sec. Gowan Lea, Miss Cobham, and Orazone worked well over a circuit, without being asked to make time. Just So. did only half-pace work, and seemed a bit sore after her exercise. Orby’s Choice, Panatrope, and Kilting were allotted lijht tasks. 'J'areka and Valpre went half a mile, finishing together in 50 3-sscc. Banbridge, Green Linnet. Anbrtdge, and the Sheffield filly, members of Fryer’s team, worked a round together at threequarter pace. Royal Acre schooled a round by himself, his jiiuip’ing being faultless. New Plymouth Track Work. Despite the rain, the local track was in good order for work on Thursday morning (says the “Taranaki Herald.”). All the fast work took place on the trial grass, which was slightly on the slow side. Peg Black and the Bisogne—Waitui gelding were the first out, and they ran three furlongs in 40sec. Qulllfiro went twice round ,on the inside at half-pace. Miss Chatter and Espion went halt a mile In 53*sec. Crenna Town and Annoyer kept together all the way over'five furlongs, in Imin. Ssec. Dunedin Items. The improvement made by Meadow Lark is shown by the handicapper’s opinion. Last season ho was unplaced in the Publicans’ Handicap with 7.11, and is top weight this year with 9.13. The Th urnham gelding who tops the list in the Dunpdin Cup, wpujiod his winning account last season by scoring in the Trial Stakes, run at the same meeting held last year. Coupt Cavour was unplaced with 9.0 in the Dunedin Cup last year, and this year meets Pink Note on 111 b. better terms than when the latter ran second to Nightmarch. Munro for Germany made available what appears to be several good rides on the great galloper, Amounis. Trainer F. McGrath says that J. Pike has been engaged to ride Amounis in all his autumn races. Amounis, with Pike up, won the Rosehill Stakes on Saturday. When for the Rosehill weight-for-age race were taken only eight were nominated. and Amounis’s chief opponent looked and proved to be the three-year-old Gay Ballerina. Agrion Racing Again. u\. writer in the Perth “Call’’ had the following to say about the cx-Riccarton horse Agrion:—“One of the. best-looking horses seen on Perth. tracks for a considerable period was given an outing in the AllAged .Stakes at Ascot on New Year’s Day. Although considerably above himself in condition, the New Zealand-bred stallion, despite the fact that he had not raced for a couple of years, showed that he still knows how to use his legs by finishing fourth to Pure Blend, Prince Paladin, and Keenedge. Not only did Agrion attract by his forward running, but the manner in which he closed on the field up the straight caused keen judges to mark the son of Limond off as an early winner. NOTES FROM RICCARTON SOME FAST GALLOPS Dominion Special Service. Christchurch, February 1. Some interesting fast work was executed at Riccarton this moruiug, especially along the back stretch of the outside of the trial grass, which was opeu. Paquito was responsible for a pleasing effort over a mile, beating Marshani, who joined him at five furlongs, in the good time of Imin. 42sec., each half taking Slsec. Apart from the time point of view, Paquito’s work was very attractive, as he was running on at the finish and is evidently baek to form. Sliver Coot drew attention to his future prospects by reeling off half a mile along the back in 48 3-ssec. A reproduction of this performance would win him races. Dou Jose, picked up by Pixie Gold at five furlongs, ran seven furlongs in Imin. 30 3-ssec„ the latter having a slight call at the post. Praise and Ozone were associated In a run home from the half-mile post, Tim latter was in front a furlong from the line, but Praise finished on the better and beat her companion by a length in 51 2-5 sec. Dunraven was In front of Gay Crest at the end of five furlongs in Imin. 5 2-usec., the last h’alf in 50 2-ssee. It was a flatfooted start, and the two-year-old showed marked improvement. Hurly Burly sprinted four furlongs along the back in 49sec. Meprlsant and Netley occupied Imin. 20 sec. in accomplishing a useful sI.S-furlong task. Disorder was sent over a mile and a quarter, finishing better ' than Waterline in 2min. 12 1-SSCC. The last seven furlongs took Imin. 33see., and the concluding bait 53 2-ssec. Disorder’s effort was impressive. Whatnot showed too much pace for Coroner over four furlongs home in 49 2-5 sec. . Noteworthy registered a similar performance along the back. Starshooter was restricted to a strong gallop over nine furlongs, taking Imin. 59sec. _ Leader strode over half a mile in 53 2-5 sec., and Amor beat Hounslow in a sevenfurlong gallop in Imin. 34sec. The Dunedin Champagne Stakes candidate Spoon covered live furlongs in Imin. ssec., slowing up at the finish. Straightcoursc and Ball Dress were together after traversing the same ground in Imin. 4 3-ssec. , Count Cavour was again seen to advantage in a nine-furlong gallop, , The Viscount assisting him over the last six. An even pace was maintained throughout, and Count Cavour finished strongly In Imin. 57 l-ssee. Topere led Audience home at the conclusion of six furlongs, run iu Imin. IS l-ssec. Nightmarch; and Aspiring were companions over five furlongs, finishing abreast in Imin. 3 2-ssec. Tray Bond executed a similar task in Imin. 4sec. Itauelagh showed promise by galloping six furlongs iu Imin. 17sec„ easily beating Compels. I J angolin was given strong exercise over a mile. He still shows signs of soreness. The famous Australian mare Valicaro will arrive nt the Hororata Stud shortly. Site will stay there until next spring, when she will go on a visit to Night Raid. Probably she will return to Hororata. where her foal will be reared until it is a yearling. Valleare is in foal to Magpie. Two other Australian mares, Spionella, a three-year-old imported filly by Splonkop, and Bed Shank by Thrice, have already .arrived at the stud, where they will remain until they visit Night Raid. Mr. P. H. Osborne, of Sydney, owner of Vatican!, and Mr. Ken Austin, visited the Hororata Stud during this week and ns a result probably several more Australian mares will be scut over to the stud. The yearling brother to Cylinder by Limond from Cymene at the Hororata Stud, has been gelded and will bo sent to J. H. Jefferd during the next few weeks. He. is an exceptionally fine colt and on looks should be a great improvement on Cylinder as a racehorse. Mr. A. B. Williams’s other yearling, a filly by Limond from Sweet Charity, will not be trained and will probably be bred from next season. _ , Cymene, the dam ot Cylinder, missed last season, but is now'believed to be in foal to Hunting Song. She will visit Night Raid next season. Sweet Lburitj, wlio Ims returned Io Hororuta after visiting Gothic in Victoria,, has a fine colt Joni by Shambles. ’’She has -been booked to Chief Ruler next season. FIXTURES. Feb. s—Tapanui R.C.
