STRANDED RAILWAY PASSENGERS
ATTEMPT AT RELIEF FAILS THREE DROWNED WHEN BOAT CAPSIZED Brisbane, January 31. The first attempt to give relief to stranded railway passengers near the Burdekin River ended disastrously when a motor-boat carrying twelve passengers and five of a crew capsized, throwing the occupants into swirling waters. Despite heroic attempts at rescue by the occupants of a nearby boat three persons were washed away and drowned. Practically all the luggage was lost. Because of the risk attending the operations the ferrying of passengers has been suspended. At Julia eighty-four passengers are stranded in carriages where they have been living for a fortnight. With the arrival of two divisions of the Townsville express seven hundred passengers will be m(irooned on the southern side of the Burdekin and two hundred on the Townsville side. Fifteen spans of the Cloncurry River bridge have been thrown out of alignment and parts of the structure have disappeared altogether.
