Mrs. Finlayson, of Masterton, has been visiting Lower Hutt. Mrs. J. A. Rosewarne and her two daughters have returned • to Masterton from a visit to Auckland. Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Coleman have returned to Masterton from a tour of the North Island. Mr. and Mrs. E. R. McKillop, of VVellington, have returned from a short visit to Mastertoil. ‘ , Mrs. W. Crawford has returned to Featherston from a short stay in Wellington. Mrs. S. Browne, of Khandallah, Wellington. is staying at Featherston. . Miss W. Williams has returned to Featherston from a holiday in the north. Mr. and Mrs. Cormack, of Gisborne, are the guests of Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Martin' at Martinborough. Mrs. H. Cork, of Wanganui, is the guest of Miss Butement at Masterton. Mrs. E. M. McLevie has returned to Masterton from a visit to Wellington. Mrs. Bett, of Nelson, is the guest of Mrs. James Andrew at “lea," Masterton. The Misses P. and M. Dunn, of Wellington, are the guests of Mrs. H. Beetham, at Masterton.

The first American woman to be u appointed engineering assistant in any city department of New York is Miss Mae V. Connolly, who has just been appointed to serve in the construction branch of one of the highway bureaus of tfie city. Miss Connolly is one of those energetic American women of whom we hear, who, while earning her living all day, followed university courses at night to get on in her work. She started as a clerk in the same office where she now holds an important position. The engineering courses which she took at Columbia University enabled her to qualify _ for the Civil Service examination, which she passed with honours. • . According to “The Times,” legislation will be introduced in the Legislature of the Canadian province Quebec admitting women to. the practice of law. Quebec and Prince Edward Island being the only Canadian province which still upholds the exclusion of women from the legal profession, it is-very satisfactory that their admission has now finally been approved of by the General Council of the Bar of Quebec.
