OVERSEAS TRADE
EXPORT VALUES DOWN BIG INCREASE IN IMPORTS FIGURES FOR LAST YEAR The outstanding feature fa the overseas trade returns for the twelve months ended December 31, 1929, is the large increase In the imports, amounting to £4,311,711 compared with those for the calendar year, 1928. At the same time there has been a decrease in the value of the t ports for the year of £609,418compared with 1928. The position is shown tn the following comparative tables1929 1928 or Decrease £ £ £ Hints 55.579,063 56,188,481 *609,418 K: S7>7 44886,266 4811,711 Excess Expts. 6,381,186 11,802,215 ' •Decrease. The following tables, giving imports and exports by months for 1928 and 1929, show clearly the trend of trade during the last two years:—
Due to the causes mentioned, the excess of exports over imports of £ll,302,215 at the end of 1928 was reduced by approximately £5,000,000 at the end of 1929. The calendar year is not the best basis of comparison, as it Includes parts of two export seasons. It will probably be found at the end of the current export year, say July 31, that the position will be much less favourable than at the end of December, The fall in the price of dairy produce has been largely reduced by increased production and export, but this will not be so in the case of wooL
