THE RACING WORLD

WAIPAPAKAURI AND WAIRIO MEETINGS NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By

Poneke.)

There will be racing this week at Pahiatua (on Wednesday and Thursday), Takapuna (on Wednesday and Saturday), and Wairoa (on Tuesday and Thursday).

The first race at Pahiatua on Wednesday is timed to start at noon.

On January 3t nominations for the Napier Park and Woodville autumn meetings dose, and acceptances arc due for the Taranaki and Gisborne meetings.

Few of the maiden performers engaged at the Pahiatua meeting give promise of going very far in the racing world, and though Roundelay has been rather disappointing up to the present he will carry sufficient public confidence to send him out favourite. The course is one which should suit the Limond gelding, and his chance of making a commencement as a winner looks bright.

Bonogne. who is engaged in a six and a seven-furlong race at Pahiatua on ’Wednesday. is in good form at present. Ho was unlucky at Ashhurst, where his chance was ruined through another horse cannoning into him at the start of his race. He is likely to make amends before returning to New Plymouth.

Gold Bag stays better than most of the hacks that compete at provincial fixtures. Small fields and a big course, which will be the conditions at Pahiatua this week, will plav into his hands, and he should get a share of the stake-money.

Expensive on Saturday. A southern hack that must be proving expensive is Abbeville. The money was in again on Saturday at Walrio. Abbeville, who is a four-year-old gelding by Thurnham —Moorabbe, could do no better than run third. He is one of A. S. Ellis’s team, and has been backed unsuccessfully on more than one occasion this season.

A Waipapakaurl failure who appears to have been expected to win on Saturday was Exalted. , The Leighton—Flora McDonald mare did not meet a strong field in the Awanul Hack Handicap, and was fancied in the right Quarter. She finished ont of a place. Exalted, who won only one of the fourteen races she contested last sbason, is a sister to the southern hack Dumblane, who, too, is disappointing. In the weaker company he will meet at Pahiatua, Ex Dono, who ran creditably at the Wellington meeting, is a possibility. A win for the Acre gelding is overdue. On Top. Northerners present at the Wellington meeting had a good word to say for On Top, who is to contest the Trial Stakes at Takapuna on Wednesday. On Top is one of the stock of the Wcllingto nCup winner Surveyor. Relation, who is down to contest the Ferry Handicap at Takapuna on Wednesday, is owned by the Wairarapa sportsman Mr. W. H. Bidwlll, and is a really promising hack. By Chief Ruler from the ‘ dam of Suggestion, there is plenty of him, and he is a natural galloper. He had only one race as a two-year-old, and in his next outing won a division of the Maiden Stakes at Masterton, beaUns Roundelay (a hot favourite), Goldlike, Habit, and others. Goldlike and Habit have since won races. Prodice and Corinax represent the best form of the horses engaged in the Takapuna Cup. ’ Both will be advantaged if the course is soft. The first public appearance the Australian-bred Hampton Park made was at Takapuna in the spring. He won, and the form still looks fairly good, notwithstanding that none of those behind him have reached the best class. Hampton Park was strongly fancied for an engag ';‘ meut at Ellerslie on. Boxing Day, but failed. He will be racing at Takapuna again this week, and unless his a P r * ag form has totally vanished he will be one of the hardest of the two-year-olds to beat. Laekhain, who is down to race at Pahiatua, competed at Asbhurst, Put, according to accounts of the racing there, kept a civ.il distance from the field and by no means threatened to win. An improving hack with more than an outside chance in the. Hack Cup at Paa !‘ tua on Wednesday is P’aaemini gelding won at Hastinps at hicw Year and is more forward now than he was then. With Kidginount and Bonogne engaged, R. Johnson’s stable holds a strong. hand in the President s Handicap at * a £ i,l f.. ’ Johnson’s elect and Dobbin look like carying the bulk of the money. A Recent Purchase. The Solferino—Monoxide colt purchased by Mr. Fuller, of New South Wales, at he yearling sales last Tuesday, win remaU ht Mr. Geo. Kain s place until hei Is a two year-old, so that he may get the best or New Zealand grass. The winnings of the Wellington-owned Concentrate, whose price as a yearling is understood to have been 800 guineas, arc assessed at £63-15. Great Star was a competitor each day at Trentliam, but he failed to gather any money. He was a disappointment on the first and second days, but on the third day he showed improved form, and only’ fade. I out in the last hundred yards. When he is all right, Great Star is an exceptionally brilliant horse, capable of going a mile. Unfortunately, he suffers from kidney trouble, and his best form has not been seen this season. Ou his return from Treutbam he was turned out for a spell, and it is unlikely that be will race again for a few months. His owner-trainer, J. IlProsser, contemplates a trip to Sydney for the winter. If he carries out this intention, he will take Great Star, and possibly a couple of two-year-olds as well. F D. Jones did not include Paqulto in his team for the Wellington meeting, but the Thurnham gelding is building up. nicely' as a result cf an easy' time, following on his strenuous racing earlier in the season. He will be kept to light tasks for another week,, after which Jones will send him along a bit faster, with a view to a possible trip south for the Duuedln Cup. News of Pliar Lap.

While the trainer of Phar Lap was in New Zealand attending the National Yearling Sales, news was received from Melbourne that the New Zealand-bred gelding is training on splendidly at Caulfield. It is expected that Phar Lap will be the star three-year-old performer in the autumn., That I’har Lap is getting a solid preparation may be gathered from the fact that he recently covered a : two-mlle journey. Marsham’s form at Trenthani was the best he has yet shown, according to the opinion of some southerners. He stayed on well In each race, while on the last day he displayed unexpected dash from the barrier. He has- made such improvement lately that he looks certain to win a race very soon. He may be seen at the Dunedin Cup meeting. While Hoylakc was not raced at the Wellington meeting, lie has been kept going at Riccnrton in useful tasks. He does not act well on heavy ground, mid it was owing to a doubt regarding the state of the track that the Trcntham trip was cancelled. It is probable that he will be at Wingatui for the Dunedin Cup. Lucky Light was started at Trentliam only once, and, having developed a bad splint, is likely to ho spelled for a while. Prom Mr. J. IL C. Grigg, of Ashburton, the Waikato trainer G. A. Reid has received a very tine yearling filly' by the imported horse Shambles from Pitbrow Lass. He should make a valuable addition to the team. Horses Shipped to Sydney. The Sydney trainer 11. R. Telford left Auckland on his return to Sydney by the Ullmaroa on Friday. While over here Telford purchased a number ot' horses, including a yearling lllly by Chief Ruler from Rapture, a yearling filly by Night Itaid from Raid, a yearling filly by Tonbridge from Tinkler. Polyzena, Audit. and Cynlqiic. These horses were also on board Hie Ulimaroa, in addition to which, there was Tea Time, who was shipped away in charge of IL Doyle. New Comers. The Rlccarton owner-trainer J. H. Prosser is working a couple of two-year-old lllllcs (says Hie Christchurch “Star”). One of them Is by the imported Last Dart (son nt the Carlline horse Spearmint) from Great Star’s dam. Theda, by San Francisco from Formnal. by Bonlform from Signal. The other is by Diacqueued, an English

horse whose early progeny show promise of speed. This filly is the first foal of Half-a-Brae, an imported mare by Bachelor’s Double. Neither of these youngsters has been seriously tried out, but they show a good deal of promise. Half-a-Braee has a colt foal ibis season by the Derby winner Agrion. and his owner is very optimistic about ids prospects, as he considers him the best-looking foal he has bred. Still Unlucky.

Always an unlucky performer during her racing career, judging from her lengthy list of seconds, the Solferino mare Geranial is still among the' unfortunates. It was recently' discovered that she had been Injured in some unknown fashion in a stud paddock, the result being five damaged ribs, three of the number being broken. In the meantime she Is rearing a nice filly foal by Last Dart, but in due course she is to be operated upon to reduce the fractures, and, all going well, she will be mated with Paladin. Apache and Paris.

•‘The novice hurdlers. Apache and Paris, have no immediate engagements ahead, but both are building up surely under lengthy pacin exercise and moving soundly (writes “Sir Modred”). The brothers took some persuading to adopt the jumping business, but displayed promise towards the close of the winter season, and are likely to be beard from when the sting is out of the ground and battenracing becomes the topic of the hour, as they appear to be sound in wind and limb* The third of the Solferlno brothers in Mr. W T Hazlett’s team, Taramoa, retains his condition of the winter and spring seasons. and should be ready to race at Wlngatui next month. It is a great pity that he is troubled in the respiratory organs, as otherwise he, too; would have been a valuable hurdler, but he may do fairly well In competing between the flags, as he jumped the big country at Rlccarton in August last, and this fact is decidedy in his favour when it comes to a steeplecliasing career.”
