But for having to call at Suva to land cargo for Fiji, the Coptic would have made a very fast passage to New Zealand, as the average speed from London to Auckland was 15 knots. The steaming time from Suva to Auckland was only 3 days 3 hours 36 minutes, which Included a stop of over an hour near Moko Hinau Island, owing to foggy weather. Captain J. Chalmers and Wellington, and is duo here on February 2. ITALY’S SUPER-LINERS Arrangements have been made for the construction of two fast super-libers for service between Italian ports aud New York. An official announcement Issued by tiie Lloyd Sabaudo Company states that tiie contract lias now been signed with the Stabillmento Tecnlco Triestino for the construction of the first liner. The ship will have a speed of about 26 knots, which will enable it io make the passage from Naples to New York iu about seven days. Tiie tonnage will be something over 40,000 gross, and propelling machinery will consist of high-pressure turbines incorporating the latest improvements. It is of Interest to note that the owners after careful consideration have decided to entrust tiie designing of tiie boilers to Messrs. Yarrow and Co., Ltd., of Scotstoun. Glasgow. The boilers will be constructed at die Andrea Engine Works nt Trieste. Il is expected that announcements will shortly be made with regard to the construction of tiie other liner for the service of tiie Navlgazione Generale Italiana. In all probability this liner will be built In one of the Genoa yards, but as yet no announcement lias been made with regard to her propelling machinery. The lengthening of tiie piers at Genoa in order to take the new 40.000 lons liners is already under consideration, and it is also possible that tiie dry-docking accommodation nt Genoa will lie improved In order to make possible ‘he dry-docking of these larger liners.

RANGITANE FROM ENGLAND DUE 7 P.M. TO-DAY A wireless message was received yesterday by the New Zealaud Shipping Co. from their third new motor liner, the Rangitane, announcing that she will now arrive in the stream at Wellington at 7 o'clock this evening from London and Southampton. If the weather is fine the vessel will berth this evening. She is to go to the Pipltea Wharf. The Rangitaue is bringing 59 first-class passengers, 40 second class, and 90 third class. She has 50 bags ot mails and 758 pareel receptacles. PORT DARWIN’S PASSENGERS. The C. and D. Line steamer Port Darwin, which left Lyttelton at 11 p.m. on Wednesday for London, via Panama, took the following passengers:—Mrs. Macdonald, Mr. Nicholls, Miss L. Garling, Mr. and Mrs. Garling, Professor and Mrs. Mills and family, and Mrs. A. E. Hurley. Dr. Macdonald accompanied the vessel as ship’s surgeon. SURREY SAILS TO-DAY. Delayed in completing loading at Auckland owing to wet weather, the Federal Co. advise that the Surrey will now leave that port to-day for New York, Boston, Halifax, and London. HORORATA, FROM LONDON. News has been received by the New Zealand Shipping Co. that the Hororata is to leave London on March 20 for Suva, Lytteltou, Port Chalmers, and Blutf. MAKURA LEAVES SYDNEY Cabled news has been received by the Union Company that the Makura_ left Sydney at 4 p.m. yesterday for Wellington. She is due here on Monday morning, and will leave again the following afternoon for San Francisco, via Raratonga and Papeete. NIAGARA DUE AUCKLAND MONDAY. The Union Company advise that the R.M.S. Niagara, from Vancouver, via Honolulu, will leave Sura to-day for Auckland, where she is due on Monday morning* The vessel will leave again at 5 p.m.' on Tuesday for Sydney. MESS TABLE GOSSIP.
