The following are the winners of the principal races at the various meetings:— AUCKLAND. HAWKE’S BAY. Grandstand Handicap.—Historic. New Year Handicap.—Merry Damon. Royal Stakes.—Greenaway. AUCKLAND MEETING GREENAWAY WINS ROYAL STAKES HISTORIC’S GRANDSTAND HANDICAP Dominion Speci'ai Service. Auckland, January 2. The Auckland Racing Club’s summer • meeting concluded at Ellerslie in glorious weather to-day. There was a large attendance and the racing was first class. The totalisator receipts tor the d ®yj ( s er ? 761-10/-, compared with £.80,107 for the corresponding day of last year, an increase of .£4561-10/-. The total receipts for the four days' were £352,346, as against £319,048/10/- for last year, an increase of £33,387/10/-. When’ the falls occurred in the Hurdle Race J. Preston received a dislocated shoulder and B. Shaw a bruised back. . T. Green won his fourth successive Royal Stakes on Greenaway. GOODWOOD HANDICAP. Hyde Park and Merry Mint headed a great pool on the Goodwood Handicap. The favourite lost all chance by being badly cut back at the start. Tanerlri led at the end of three furlongs, and at the turn Panther, Lady’s Boy, Imperial Prince, Flying Prince, and King Emerald were all round him. Tanerlri then drew out, but he just stalled off a run by King Emerald. He won' narrowly. Antique, Flying Juliet, Merry Mint, and King Midas were all close up. The winner had made progress from the first day, and he began much better. King Emerald ran up to form, and Antique made a surprisingly good showing, as did Hyde Park, after being left. SYLVIA HANDICAP. Awaken was a good favourite for the Sylvia Handicap, and she pulled her backers through without much trouble. Awaken was first out, but Bells of Shandon and Set Fair led round the turn from Sight Draft and Awaken, when the favourite came on to win decisively from Hells of Shandon and Betterment, with Sight Draft and Set Fair next. The winner is a good and consistent filly. Bells of Shandon Is Improving, but Tremetus failed to act in the ground, which at this stage was slightly holding. GRANDSTAND HANDICAP. Goshawk and Vertlgern were heavily backed in the Grandstand Handicap. Amor, Goshawk, Lucy Rose, and High Pitch were always prominent, Lucy Rose rounding the turn with High Pitch, Prodice, Corlnax and Historic handy. In a great finish Historic got up to beat Lucy Rose by a neck, with Prodlce a neck away clear of High Pitch and Corinax. Goshawk and Vertigern had every chance but failed badly. Prodice ran another sterling race, and Historic, who finished well, deceived most people, who Imagined he had trained off. He returned a'good double-figure price. Lucy Rose is back to form and is due at any time. AUCKLAND HURDLES. Even betting on the Auckland Hurdles saw King’s Guard and Elysianor at the head of the post. Pangolin and Prince Lu went out fast, but Pangolin toppled over at the second hurdle and Serang at the third. Importer fell at the five furlongs when moving up, and Prince Lu was left clear of Elysianor, with King’s Guard coming from well back. This trio were in close order at the last hurdle, where Prince Lu fell, leaving Elysianor to win nicely from King’s Guard, with Kawlni, Rahepoto, and Mashoor at intervals. King’s Guard made a great attempt to win his fourth race, but Elysianor was too good. The class was poor. Prince Lu looked a winner when he fell at the last fence ROYAL STAKES. Hunting Cry and Cylinder were heavily backed in the Royal Stakes. Tenterden soon hit the front and ,led to the turn from Cylinder, Hunting Cry, and Dunraven, Cylinder and Huting Cry were hard ,at it near the post when Greenaway came "fast to beat Cylinder by a neck, Hunting Cry being a head away clear of Eaglet. It was a splendid race, in which Cylinder may have succeeded but for a slight check at the half-mile. Hunting Cry ran a sterling race under his big weight. CLIFFORD PLATE. Pegaway was at odds-on for the Clifford Plate. It was a fine race. Pegaway, Toxeuma, Concentrate in close order made a good pace all the way at the distance. Concentrate came with a rush,, but, hard pressed, Pegaway responded and won by a head, with Toxeuma a length away. I It was a pretty race with Gray shining as a general. Pegaway held his form splendidly through the meeting and Con- 1 centrate is also, right at his top. BOWEN HANDICAP. Clmabue and Knightlike carried most money in a very even pool on the Bowen Handicap. Leitrim and Great Star ran to the front at the end of a furlong and led to the turn from Cimabue and Awarere Leitrim drew clear in the straight, and, running it right out, won decisively from Awarere, who beat Clmabue by a head. Gold Money and Knightlike being next. Leitrim improved in his third day effort. Knightlike was kept too far out of it early, and Valuation was last away and then covered a lot of extra ground. Great Star seemed to 'be feeling his previous hard races. GREY HANDICAP. Richfield was a good favourite over Arehieval in the Grey Handleap. Thurmis was badly left, Relation and ■ Archieval taking up the running from Richfield and Gay Cockade. At the turn Relation and Arehieval led Gay Cockade, Richfield and Spring Abbey. Richfield then came away to win easily from 'Arehieval, with Prince of Orange a fair third and Tuku, Nassock. Nassau ' Lady and Spring Abbey next. The winner found the drying track to his liking and’atoned for earlier bad luck. He is a good horse. Arehieval was unlucky to strike such a good one as Rich field. He Is one likely to win, but is touched in the wind. Prince of Orange, Relation and Spring Abbey are others that . should repay watching. DETAILS OF THE RACING By Telegraph.—-Press Association. Fernden, getting an opening on the rails, finished best and won by half a length from Silver Coot, who had an advantage of a length and a half over Royal Duke. Callanmore was fourth. TAWAHA WELTER. Oscar, on the rails, was the first away, but the field had not gone far when the colours of Footpad were showing out from Oscar, Waterspear, and Semper Paratus. Dainty Ways and High Society were the next to finish, close up to the third horse. JUVENILE HANDICAP. The Juvenile Handicap was robbed of a great deal of Interest owing to Sir Limond, who was the popular selection, swinging round as the tapes were released, and getting left at the post. Sporting Chauce began best, but Arajean soon hit the front, leading a closely bunched field round the bend. She was the first into the straight, but held a Very slight advantage over Sporting Chance, Benign, Cessation and Ball Dress. A furlong from home AraJeau, Sporting Chanco, Masterton, and Santa Anna were racing almost abreast. Ai-ajeau, however, stalled off all challenges to win by three-quarters of a length from Sporting Chance, with Masterton a close third. Santa Anna, Ball Dress, and Cessation were the next to finish, PRESIDENT’S HANDICAP. ' The start of the President’s Handicap was delayed on account of the fractiousness of Stanchion, who ultimately started from the extreme outside. Tallsker was first away, aud at the start had charge from Pluthair, Gold Bag, Make Up, Rory Mor, and Billion. At the mile post Tallsker was still In charge, Stanchion having run up into sixth position. Tallsker was collared on the bend, Billion leading into the straight from Rory Mor, Tallsker, Full Feather, and Pluthair. With a furlong to go the latter commenced her run and just when it appeared that she had the race won Stanchion put in an electric run on the outside of the field. He was too late, however, Piutlmir securvertiict by a neck. Rory Mor and Full Feather went past the post locked together half a length behind Stanchion. It was a great race, with Stanchion finishing over the top of the others. MOROA HANDICAP. A good dispatch was effected In the Moroa Handicap, Grecian, on the rails, assuming command from Clarendon, ,Kirlana, Emotion, Shortly, Chopiu, Imateagirl and Mothplane, who appeared to stumble. Emotion was in- second berth with two furlongs covered, while Mothplane had run into a handy position. Three furlongs from home Motliplane moved, up to the leaders and approaching the straight was In charge from Emotiou, with Clarendon showing up on the outside. The latter did best In the run home and won nicely by a length. Imateagirl, Chopin, Grecian, Motliplane and another went past the post In line, the judge placing Imateagirl second and Chopin third. The latter was some way back as the field came into the straight and did well to get up into third position. He is racing most consistently. WAIHENGA HANDICAP. • Joy Bird started Indifferently in the Waihenga Handicap, the others getting away in line. At the end of a furlong Teri had charge from Miss Ransom, Royal Lineage, Arikinui, Joy Bird, Cerf and Don Jose. Leaving the back stretch Royal Lineage and Teri were together with Miss Ransom and Cerf next. Don Jose and Joy Bird Improved their positions approaching the straight, at the entrance to which Teri (on the rails} led from Royal Lineage, Arikinui, Cerf and Don Jose. The first four were in line with a furlong to go, with Joy Bird showing up on the outside. Royal Liueage, Arikinui and Cerf were beiug bard ridden inside the distance, but Ridgway, ou Teri, never found it necessary to draw his whip. Although he won by only half a length, Teri did it nicely and appeared to have a bit in hand. Royal Lineage was half a length in front of Arikinui, with Cerf a good fourth. Joy Bird was last. GREYTOWN HANDICAP. ■ ' Fernden was scratched, leaving eight runners in the Greytowu Handicap. Rational II dwelt at the barrier, and lost several lengths. Noteworthy and Mandy were the first to show out from Manifesto, Beu Hur, and Hurly Burly. Between the three and two furlong posts Noteworthy dropped back, Mandy piloting the field into the straight. A furlong from home Mandy appeared to have the race won, though she had little to spare from Hurly Burly and Ben Hur. It was not until the last 100 yards that Rational II came into the pic-, ture. but getting a nice run on the rails Voitre pushed him through to win going away by a length and a half from Mandy, who had a length’s advantage over Hurly Burly. Ben Hur was fourth, and Agrestic last. PIRINOA STAKES. Satfnblrd was the only scratching in the Pirinoa Stakes. The horses were in a good line when the tapes were released. With two furlongs gone Wine Tray, Projection and Turnbridge were in charge. The former was done with at-the entrance to tlie straight, where General Gas and Dancing Star ran into the picture. MARTON MEETING STAKES WON BY OTAIRI ASPIRING TAKES THE SPRINT (By Telegraph.—From "The Watcher.”) Marton, January 2. The summer meeting of the Marton Jockey Club concluded to-day in glorious weather. There was a good attendance, and the track provided excellent going. The principal event, the Aidworth Stakes, was won by Otairi, while Aspiring took the sprint. Totalisator receipts wer® a trilie above those for the corresponding day last year, being £21,757, as against £21,548. The total for the meeting was £49,743, a decrease of £1407 on last New Year meeting. JUNCTION PLATE. With Acora out of the opening event backers went for Equltant and Habit, expressing a decided opinion that the former was nearly a certainty, but they burnt their fingers. Habit winning handily. Equitant began best from Habit, and then came the bunch, in which Bay Acre. Catherin of Aragon, Wee Acre, and Just an Idea were the most prominent. Equitant led into the straight, but Habit woie her down In the run home to win by threequarters of a length. Just an Idea was four or five lengths back third, well clear of Qutaola who was followed by Catherine of Aragon and Bayacre. The leading pair outclassed their opponents. Habit is now racing much more solidly than hitherto. SECOND HACK HURDLES. The first day’s winner, Aurora Borealis, was favourite in a good betting pool in the hurdles, and with an ounce would have won again. Borsalene made the running from Vinella. Call Again, and Skyrider, Aurora Borealis tailing off. There was no material change until the home turn, where Aurora Borealis was moving up fast. Vinella and Skyrider jumped to the front at the second last hurdle, and were followed Into the straight by Aurora Borealis. The trio were practically on terms at the last fence, and. once over, there was a desperate race. Vinella winning by a head from Aurora Borealis, who was a couple of lengths ahead of Skyrider. Call Again was a poor fourth, followed by Borsalene. who nearly fell at the last fence. It looked as If Aurora Borealis should have won. Borsalene will win races when she learns to jump properly. THE ALDWORTH STAKES. Otairi made amends for his bad luck the first day by leading all the way in the Aidworth Stakes, and scoring a comfortable victory. When settled down in the running Otairi led from First Acre, Avro, and Keddar, bunched, then Hoylake, with Silver Paper whipping in. There was no change until well down the back stretch, where Hoylake ran up on the outer of Keddar. Then on the turn Avro got chopped back, Silver Paper making a forward move. Otairi led into the straight from First Acre, Keddar, Hoy lake, and Sliver Paper. The latter quartet was well bunched. Silver Paper threw out a challenge, but Otairi could not be reached, and won by a length and a half from Silver Paper, who beat First Acre by three-quarters of a length. Avro was fourth, and then came Hoylake and Keddar. In view of the winner’s great race at Awapuni the last day with 7.13. he was well in to-day at 7.7, and he gave nothing a chance. Silver Paper ran a creditable race. He looked dangerous at one stage, but was weakening again at the finish. First Acre, who went out a good favourite, was beaten a good way from home, and Hoylake ran ungenerously. ELECTRIC HANDICAP. A bad start completely spoiled the chances of the favourite, Statuary, in the hack seven and he ran so well afterwards that with an even break he would have been hard to beat. They went off in straggling order. Patearoa jumping away in front, from Marlca and Glenomine. then YVarfiUe, Spearform and Llmosiu. Marlca and Glenomine joined Patearoa on the home turn and they led into line from Limosin and Warfllie. Once straightened up Limosin challenged and got up to beat Patearoa by a head. Glenomine was a iouple Of lengths away third with Wariille a moderate fourth. Statuary was next, followed by Phastar. Goldlike, Valma and Fine Acre. The winner was not away over-well, but he was good enough, to win. Phastar and Fine Acre were amongst those who got oft badly, and under the circumstances they ran well. TELEGRAPH HANDICAP. Aspiring won the open sprint event comfortably. She and Freehold were evenly backed. The Raider, Freehold and Aspiring ran in company to the straight, where Aspiring forged ahead to beat hreehold by a length and a half, with Broad Acre two lengths away third clear of The Raider. , . It was easy money for the winner. The Raider raced below form at the meeting. LADIES’ BRACELET. The Bulls bracket, Brigadier Bill and Red Lane, started favourites for the gentlemen riders’ race, but both were well beaten. Th'e race provided an interesting finish between the second favourite, Pahu. aud the veteran Imperial Spark, in which Mr. J. Morris was seen to advantage on the winner, Pahu, getting home oleverlv by a neck. Red Lane was five, lengths back third, with Brigadier Bill fourth, followed by Limosin and Some Red. TURAKINA HANDICAP. High Flautin started a red hot order in the live-horse field for the open seven furlong race. He tailed the others, who were led by Malayan to the straight, and then came away to score with ease by three lengths, Malayan hanging on to beat Second Thought for second by a neck. Briar Root was a couple of lengths back fourth, with Rol de Vai tailed off. Malayan gave an improved showing, but he had no chance with the winner, and he will have to improve a lot more to win a good race here. .FAREWELL HANDICAP. It was not hard to “pick” the last event on the card, and backers summed up correctly in favour of Acora and Tea Taster, Tea Taster led Acora and Rule Britannia to the straight, where Acora came on and won by three lengths from Tea Taster, who beat Acreline by a similar margin. Look Out was fourth, followed by Rule Britannia and Whenuatonga. Acora outclassed her opponents, and Is a smart filly who has not done winning yet. Tea Taster had every chance. Rule Britannia did not get away as smartly as usual, but she was soon up, and had every 1 chance. She ran below her form. Look Out ran a fair. race.
