OVERSEAS NOTES

In contrast with authors who are daughters of distinguished novelists, what about one who is the mother of a wellknown writer? Flavin Camp Fisher, the mother of Dorothea Canfield Fisher — better known by her pen-name of Dorothy Canfield —commenced writing at the age of 65 and has now published’ almost a dozen volumes, mostly for children. At the age of 80 she took a trip round the world alone, and to commemorate the tour wrote a book which she dedicated to “All Octogenarians.” Lady Louis Mountbatten has been on a tour to the northern capitals and Russia (writes a Londoner). She loves travelling, and is an ideal “tourist” in that she goes everywhere with an open mind. “'When in Rome do as Rome does” is the spirit in which to travel abroad. Lady Mountbatteu, who inherited a vast fortune from her grandfather, Sir Ernest Cassel, is one of the kindest and most generous-hearted women. Also she is one of the best dressed; invariably wearing simple but well-cut clothes—the secret of good dressing.

The tennis world again occupies the spotlight, and white is still the prime favourite, as it is with other sports enthusiasts, for motoring, sailing, eta. A useful eusemble is a short-sleeved white lisle sweater over a white silk sleeveless dress, or a white wool crepe sleeveless dress and a man’s white angora sweater. Both costumes could be completed by the addition of a pastel coloured cardigan or coat after a strenuous game or driving to and from the club. Pale yellow is a perfect accessory or pale blue like the sky on a cloudless day. Of course, if you must be correct to the last de- . tail, add a pair of white wool socks rolled at the ankles, white canvas shoes. Oxford style, and a white visor, if you feel the need of it.
